Banksy Show in Istanbul/Turkey, by gripin on Jan 26, 2016 10:36:32 GMT 1, hello urbanart association members
well, this is my first thread here.
last weekend i attended the so-called „world biggest“ banksy show in istanbul/turkey. let me say, that i was both, curious and sceptical about it, because there was not that much information about it on the homepage of the gallery or internet overall. it is well situatet in the heart of istanbul, but quite tricky to locate it, inbetween all the small streets out there.
the brand new gallery (banksy is the first show) was set up like a location or street somewhere in east london. with brick walls (made of styropor or plaster i think), luminous lanterns and also an oldstyle telephone box, some projection screens with sequences of driving subway and people in tube stations.
at the beginning there were shown many prints (signed, unsigned and in different colour ways), also a fake banksy tshirt shop and a banksy candy shop. in the next following rooms the original works get my full attention. and there a lot of them. beginning in smaller sizes they grow bigger and bigger from room to room up tol some full wall covering pieces.
the show was curated by steve lazarides and yes, i guess he did a good job.
at the very last and before leaving the show the obligatet gift shop wants your attention (and money). it is called „the unofficial, unauthorized, fake gift shop“! this looked to me quite weird :-), but i guess this is the turkish style of a banksy gift shop, but see the impressions…
I apologise for my poor english here and for some bad pictures, but the light in the showrooms was quite difficult.
hope you enjoy it and let me say what you think.

Banksy Show in Istanbul/Turkey, by Happy Shopper on Jan 26, 2016 11:01:34 GMT 1, Makes me wonder where all these come from! Are they for sale?
Looks like more copies of all the prints, in every variation, that were also sold at Sotheby's. Someone mentioned recently that POW still have copies of everything for the right person/price!
Plus tons of old originals!! Is it Laz that buys them all up whenever they come up for sale, or did he hoard them all right from the start (probably!), or are these mostly on consignment?

Banksy Show in Istanbul/Turkey, by Deleted on Jan 26, 2016 12:11:38 GMT 1, Unofficial official souvenirs look very great and tacky too and collectable. Who knows what is reality and what is promotion. Unofficial totally or verbal agreement in private. Laz is good at gallery shows.
The show does seem to show a marked difference between Banksy of the past with Banksy today, regarding the subject matter of his art.

The good and the bad and them make up their own minds.

The Dismaland print in the pictures says that it is a screen print, is that correct. I thought everyone said it was a Giclee?

Banksy Show in Istanbul/Turkey, by 11 on Jan 26, 2016 19:08:38 GMT 1, Fantastic pictures gripin thank you so much for sharing.
Is this all from Laz's 'personal' collection - bit of a greedy bugger if it is With the quality and depth of work in there you'd have thought it was the sort of collection the artist would have retained for his own archive............
The gift shop is the weirdest bit for me and obviously a shameless money grab. Some postcards or catalogues related to the show maybe but this is no different to the Groupon level retailers churning out unofficial reproductions - at least he can continue selling it on the bay when the show finishes.
