Advice; EBay Private listing vs. Boardsale, by Deleted on Mar 3, 2016 19:45:01 GMT 1, Ebay always side with the buyer from my experiences of buying and selling. While I haven't had any major issues with selling make sure you have full evidence of posting i.e tracking numbers that prove you sent it and when the buyer received. Package it as though it's a baby, take photos of the packaging during the wrapping up and after (always good to have reference shots incase the buyer puts in a claim for damage) Use are proper courier like flight logistics rather than the local postal service
You'll have to pay ebay fees and paypal fees too

Advice; EBay Private listing vs. Boardsale, by settingson on Mar 3, 2016 19:47:48 GMT 1, I've sold a lot of toys through this forum and KR forum in the past, but always through the forum using PayPal for payments. Now I'm selling my '99 Companion and the buyer wants to do a private listing on eBay, I'd be ok with that but I've never sold anything on eBay and I'm not sure what it changes for me. Can someone explain? Note; this is a fragile piece of vinyl and worst case, I don't want to end up with nothing if it arrives damaged. Of course, I will do my best to protect it, triple packing it with every piece of protective material known to mankind.
Shouldn't change too much in practical terms as Paypal will probably still be your method of payment by the sound of it. If it arrived damaged I imagine you would be losing out whether going through ebay or your normal sales route. The one big thing is the fees and with ebay and paypal fees combined it's usually works out about 15% of the sale price. They also charge fees on the postage so if it's worth bearing in mind that unless you want to eat further into your sale proceeds that for an at cost postage of say £20 you would need to charge £23

Advice; EBay Private listing vs. Boardsale, by Deleted on Mar 3, 2016 21:18:47 GMT 1, Yeah, the buyer has to send back the damaged product before they can get a refund from what I can remember. But please double check just in case this has changed.
There's nothing stopping a buyer trying to claim that the item didn't arrive hence get all the proof of delivery etc... Obviously only send the item to the address on their paypal account (apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs)

Advice; EBay Private listing vs. Boardsale, by docholiday on Mar 3, 2016 21:28:13 GMT 1, There was just a thread on this, but be sure to not get burned by someone saying the item you sent was fake too. If they have to return it they might try the old switcheroo with a bootleg. Not sure how you protect yourself here, I would just be cautious. Especially with International shipping.
I am not sure of the buyers logic since PayPal offer the same protection as eBay. Sounds a bit fishy in my opinion.

urbanartassociation.com/thread/136446/ebay-gives-buyer-license-steal
... you do not need to do a transaction through eBay to get PayPal protection, as a buyer if that is his worry ... that's why you pay the fee ...

Advice; EBay Private listing vs. Boardsale, by mlwells04 on Mar 3, 2016 21:50:40 GMT 1, The buyer gets protection through paypal, there's no need to pay the extra 10% that ebay will change. I would be weary of the deal if they are demanding you use ebay.

Advice; EBay Private listing vs. Boardsale, by Deleted on Mar 3, 2016 21:52:38 GMT 1, Very good point with the fake switch.
I'd look at the sellers ebay profile to check feedback and how long they've been active.

Advice; EBay Private listing vs. Boardsale, by kapow on Mar 4, 2016 10:22:55 GMT 1, For what it's worth, if the buyer is asking you to go through ebay it may be that they don't realise they get the same protection through PayPal. I say this because I bought a piece of art recently and asked the buyer to go through eBay. I realised afterwards that paypal would have been fine.
That said, if you do go through eBay, there are two things to bear in mind.
Fees: Ebay take 10% of sale price and paypal will take (from memory) 3.4% of sale price plus postage.
Buyer Protection: Ebay will typically side with the buyer during a dispute. You will need to deliver the piece using a tracked and signed method (don't allow them to collect, and don't hand deliver). You will need to keep the receipt you get from the Post Office. You should also consider accepting returns for the item. Not sure how true this is, but I read in a few places that some sellers had a no refunds policy, and during a dispute, eBay refunded the buyer's money and did not ask the buyer to return the item. Essentially eBay interpret no returns as "in a dispute the seller does not want the item back" so you lose the piece and the money. With a refund policy you can ask the buyer to return the item before you issue a refund. You will have to pay for return postage, but at least you get the piece back.
All that said the majority of ebayers are fine. The person I bought my piece from did none of the above! And it goes without saying that I didn't take advantage

Advice; EBay Private listing vs. Boardsale, by Philpenn on Mar 4, 2016 14:54:56 GMT 1, There aren't bootleg 99's so you're safe there. If buyer does realize Paypal is as safe as eBay and still wants to only go through eBay, then that's pretty shady.
