Custom Frames SoCal, by bigv on Mar 4, 2016 6:14:23 GMT 1, I'm currently in Huntington Beach and m I'm getting ready to move toward El Segundo in SoCal and I'll be looking to get some prints out of my portfolio and into some frames. Since I'm still new to this, I've only got one print framed (from Rainbow Frame & Art in Fountain Valley)but I want to get some more done. Is there any custom framers in the Long Beach, South Bay area that would come recommended here? Also, is there anyway to tell that a framer used archival standards to mount the print from outside the glass?

Most framers use archival standards for anything you tell them has some value (and hopefully even pieces that are not.)
No you cant tell when a piece is framed if it is archival. You can't always trust the stickers they put on the backs of the pieces either. Sometimes you can't even tell when it is out of the frame

Thanks Kultur! I'll be exploring the area around my new place and looking for galleries and exhibitions to hit up locally. Has there ever been a SoCal UAA meetup?

Custom Frames SoCal, by Villain Dillon on Mar 4, 2016 18:59:37 GMT 1, I use Allan Jeffries Framing. I go to the one on 3rd Street in the Beverly Grove area, which is their first location, but they also have one in Manhattan beach. They're pricey, but have always done an outstanding job and if I wasn't pleased with something they fixed it. I would recommend you check them out.

That guy has definitely got skills. I'll definitely have to check him out, though my style is generally much more reserved and minimalist, he's got a ridiculous body of work and experience to pull from.

Custom Frames SoCal, by steub13 on Mar 4, 2016 19:24:53 GMT 1, My wife and I have pretty reserved tastes as well. We have gotten quite a few white box floats from him. If you check his feed, most of the Hayuks he's done in the past year belong to us.
Every once and awhile, we'll bring him something to "customize" - but, I can say from experience that his basic frame ups are top notch quality.
His pricing is extremely fair too.

I saw the Hayuks and loved them. I'll be looking for something similar with black as well as white so I'll keep them in mind as examples. At some point I'll acquire a Hayul for myself, the Soundsystems and X's really brighten up a room.

They're pricey, but have always done an outstanding job and if I wasn't pleased with something they fixed it. I would recommend you check them out. I used to use Allan Jefferies, but then found they used a non-archival / fully reversible tape on a $2k print when they stated it was archival - they denied they performed the work when I confronted them, even though no one else had mounted the piece. In the end they paid to have someone attempt to remove the residue, but a lot was still left after. Now solely use Doug (Framing Devil) and find his prices much more reasonable for comparable work to other framers (and his creativety should you desire that).

To be honest, I haven't had any of the prints framed by them removed, but they did assure me that all materials they used are archival and acid-free. Is the only way to make sure to have one of the prints removed?

This is what I keep hearing and with all the art going through his instagram and facebook page, he's got all the credit in the world I need to see to make him my framer of choice when I get settled in after I move. Thanks everyone!

Totally different experience from a large chain like AB.
(Framing Devil) Doug's a one man operation and he's been framing for like 25 years or something.
Trust me on this one, I've taken quite a few AB frame up's from when I first started collecting in to Doug for re-framing. Doug is an expert at what he does - framing and art conservation.
He also happens to be extremely creative and talented as an "artist" of sorts himself. But, spend anytime talking to him and you'll quickly learn that he's all about the quality of his work and the preservation of the art.
