Mehdi Ghadyanloo ๐ฎ๐ท Mural Painter โข Iran โข Art For Sale, by mutatis on Mar 3, 2017 1:18:31 GMT 1, An excellent show and a bold move by Howard Griffin Gallery to stage a single artist show in such a big space. Perhaps this explains why the show is only on for a few days, more's the pity.
Mehdi's work appears to have grown darker in every sense, as even his colour palette appears more subdued. I would love to know what experiences he channels into his work because I don't get the feeling of hope. In fact the despair as conveyed through some of the work might normally be overwhelming given the sheer scale of his pieces and the number on show, however, although the theme remains the same this is somewhat broken up by the sculptural installation and the etchings on display, highlighting the artist's skill across different media. The etchings and a linocut are obviously smaller in scale and less impactful, but no less beautiful.
Hopefully I will be able to go back and see this in the daytime. It might be less foreboding and certainly less shadowy. Didn't hear a prog rock track all night. Well worth seeing, before he goes all stadium rock on us

"Unfortunately" it was really busy and you couldn't enjoy the art as it should be enjoy.
You really want the place to be empty.
One chair,some headphones blaring some old PInk Floyd..
My idea of heaven really..
I saw some shocking stuff tonite.
Like stupid women taking selfies in front of paintings,
Their bags against the canvas,literally .
Kids running around under no supervision.
That was really bad..
I m looking forward to go back when it s empty though..
The paintings were amazing,
And the gallery is really great .

I caught Mehdi's live Instagram stream of his show and it looked like a great turnout and a tremendous space.
Even through the livestream, I had a visceral reaction to this piece in particular. Such desperation....immediately I thought of the tragic stories of refugees who didn't survive their journey over the waters.

We were very lucky to be there when it was totally empty (apart from the gallery staff, one of which was totally lovely and charming)
Both of us were Very glassy eyed at the main sculpture, above the matt black water... and the beautifully lit muted canvases! These Really were windows into other illusionary Worlds. Escher like in their playfulness of light, perspective and shade.
The narrative of the the pieces seemed hopeless rather than "Spaces of hope"
Regardless, it was Extremely Moving and MG has something to say!!
A real talent for sure with a very loud voice in muted colours.
