I was a bit disappointed with the use of that massive hangar-like space, i saw the live feeds and really expected more. The lighting of the work was fantastic, sadly the use of spotlights to light up the room as well was a bad choice as it cast long shadows everywhere.

I tried to get back on Sunday but the Circle and Hammersmith were out so I didn't get the chance. These are the best pics I could muster :

I was talking to Richard (Griffin) and that was apparently Mehdis choice to use additional spots on preview...he thought it was also far too harsh!

The talk apparently they have only limited spaces.

I really enjoyed the evening and thought the pieces worked well in the space. I agree with the comments on the lighting and interested to hear there was a late change to arrangement - I thought each of the pieces looked a little flat from the side absent of the direct spot.

Mehdi has sparked my interest in surrealism and the concept of the sublime, which I've enjoyed reading about in recent weeks -

I've also been fascinated about how his experiences growing have shaped his work / the fear he must as a child during the Iran Iraq war is for me clearly expressed in his work - I have a unique insight into that feeling as I grew up in Iraq during the same period and it was such a surreal environment. The countries were at war but from a distance which meant that every day life was relatively notmal, puntuiated by indescriminate missile attacks from either side which put the fear of god into you -

My experience as a child gives me a privileged insight into the way Mehdi expresses himself and I can confirm that there is a truth to that expression - coupled with his clear but delicate apprciation of "the sublime" his work is, for me, on point.

I'll will say that until I started to appreciated Mehdi' work in context I didn't really like it -

One in May and the other in June.

The guy filming was from the BBC. Apparently they've been following him for a couple of years.

The three of us chatted for a bit outside (Mehdi, the photographer/film chap and myself). He went to the same university as Mehdi and Mehdi used to look up to him at the time as he was seen as a great film talent at the Uni. You are right, he now works for the BBC

Echo other members comments here - was a really good talk & reaffirmed my great admiration of this artist. Has given me a better understanding of his work and a new appreciation of one of my favorite prints on the wall at home.
