Separate insurance when shipping from the states?, by spirit on Apr 2, 2008 17:42:59 GMT 1, I am having something fairly expensive shipped from the states and I was wondering how one goes about declaring a low value and thus avoiding import duty, while insuring the item for full value through a 3rd party? Is this possible?
Can anyone give me the rundown on how it works and who the seller should approach in the states to get the insurance?
thanks

Separate insurance when shipping from the states?, by gavagai on Apr 2, 2008 22:15:26 GMT 1, I just went through this. If you are sending expensive artwork then you need to get a separate insurance carrier. You claim the full amount on the insurance/import forms but declare $0 value on the fedex/ups forms.
I used transglobal insurance to send an expensive painting from the united States to the UK and everything went smoothely. You basically call them up, describe the item and how much insurance you need, then call them back with your fedex tracking info etc.

Just to clarify - when you said "You claim the full amount on the insurance/import forms" - are these forms that you fill in with transglobalinsure?
thanks again mate

Separate insurance when shipping from the states?, by spirit on Apr 2, 2008 22:30:22 GMT 1, Also, I read this in the description of their insurance on the site which was a bit worrying...
"Damage is covered only if directly caused by fire, flood, earthquake, explosion or by collision, derailment or overturning of conveyance, vehicle or aircraft. Loss of the contents without the loss of the box is not covered."
So If my print got squashed in transit, or someone nicked it out of the box, I would not be covered I think.
Did you happen to ask them about this at all?
thanks

Separate insurance when shipping from the states?, by bonesy on Apr 2, 2008 22:35:50 GMT 1,
Sounds like it would be covered though if the item and box were lost all together (the only thing Ive ever had a problem with).
Can you give a percentage estimate of how much the coverage was compared to the insured value of the item...

Separate insurance when shipping from the states?, by spirit on Apr 2, 2008 22:43:40 GMT 1, Bonesy - Yep, thats all they really seems to cover - complete loss.
Insurance cost is 2% of the value of the item - is that what you meant?

Yup thanks. If the item is packaged well then complete loss is really your biggest worry. Good to know for int'l high priced items as Fed Ex is weird with insuring artwork.

Separate insurance when shipping from the states?, by spirit on Apr 2, 2008 23:05:43 GMT 1, Gavagai - one more thing - when ou said "You claim the full amount on the insurance/import forms" doesn't this mean I will still get hit with import duty? (if I have declared full value on import form). did you have to pay duty on your painting?
Anyone else got a second opinion/experience of this? - thanks
