This isn't to say he doesn't have every right to do it. But it does take the shine off the apple. For so long, I admired him for speaking up on freedoms, morality, defense of the innocents. For giving art away to everyone and refusing to go the traditional pricetag route.
But if this isn't "selling out" and becoming what you've spoken against, then it's as close as you can get.
My two pence.
