Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by ejvaze on Dec 5, 2007 16:46:15 GMT 1, I had a new camera and believe me the images are NOT as good as I had wanted put the wrong setting on would you believe so a bit too grainy doesn't matter it's one of the best posts i've read all week, puts everything back into perspective where it belongs..
I am Pleased if I can make you all think about what Banksy is doing. We all need to get things into perspective the events of last year has made many lose sight of what Banksy has to say. All I have heard over the past months is Banksy, Flippers, Values Auctions Money Money Money Sorry not having a go at anyone. But Banksy has stopped us in our tracks and made us think, I hope Peace on Earth to All. If only that were possible

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by ejvaze on Dec 5, 2007 17:23:27 GMT 1, If any of you do think about going
You will NOT need to take loads of money as EVERYTHING will be billed in the UK NO money passes hands in Bethlehem.
I don't want to think of a load of blokes all wandering around Palistine with bags of cash. You'll just need money for your stay. Taxis are a must if you can afford it well they make things a lot less stressful.
SO COME ON WHO IS GOING ;D ;D ;D ;D
WHO IS GOING TO BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO FOLLOW THIS LITTLE WOMAN ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Haven't got the cash, but I've got the time, if someone wants to sponsor me (eg pay for everything) I'll go and put a bid on something on your behalf.
Never know, it may work

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by becksaboo on Dec 5, 2007 23:14:20 GMT 1, wow! thanks soooo much for posting, the art looks so good but words fail me as to what i think of the wall.
if i had the money i would be over there but alas i chose a job with integrity instead of a decent wage. i would love to go for the experience and not to buy a bloody print with an image i've already seen- i think it's actually quite canny that he's not released (so far anyway) a new image as a print as who really cares about that side of things when it's in that context and it keeps the focus on the message.
maybe next year if they decide to do something similar they can give warning so that people like me can save up but i doubt this will happen as it's not their style. I love what they're doing and i completely understand the surprise element my only thing is i always thought they did prints for the man on the street (which is prob why he[s become so popular hence the value increase) to be able to buy so although they're saying come here and look at the wall and see the oppression for yourselves, realistically only loaded people can do that but fair play for them for doing this- it's definately got a lot of attention and it's got all of us lot discussing things which really matter as opposed to the usual how much is this print worth bollocks.
vazie- what was the reaction from the locals??
if people want to see the area, this video has an ariel shot of the wall which really shows the ludicrousness of it.
news.bbc.co.uk/player/nol/newsid_7110000/newsid_7114100/7114144.stm?
also, i've just watched a doc about the bbc arabic world service during the lebanon/israel war which is quite interesting- people in the uk can watch it again on the iplayer.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by reados on Dec 6, 2007 0:02:42 GMT 1, Well done Vazie and thanks for the report, Ive not commented on the show yet, but i have been reading other peoples comments with interest, , the whole Bethlehem thing was amusing at first i though it was comical and a great idea, i didn't actually believe it, and actually looked up manger square in London - there isn't one.
I have Learnt a thing or two while reading through peoples posts and listening to the news reports. This is a really important show and done for all the right reasons, and also it sticks two fingers up to the baggers and flippers. Arts not all about profit, the artists Banksy, micallef etc they are trying to get a point across and that is kind of been lost recently as we just discuss falling prices and not what the pictures are about, banksy always had a strong political message but he got his message over with some humour which i guess sweetens the blow of something not so good and tends to stick in your mind. This years santa's ghetto has that whole banksy feel, funny to take the show all the way over there, but with this unmissable message that make us look at ourselves and question things.
Even if you don't go over there or can't afford to donate money or even buy a print online, the problems in Palestine have been highlighted and thats a positive thing in itself.
i think this should re nominate POW and reset the vote on that award for best printhouse (not that its thats important) just to see what happens I know where my vote will go
sorry long boring post! just read the second to last paragraph if you skim reading

Another 8 pms to answer patience all will get back to you all ASAP ;D
Maybe I should do a fact sheet for you all
Re flights as well as expedia look at lastminute.com and ebookers for cheap flights and hotel bookings, you will need to allow a whole day to get in and out of Bethlehem OK you may not need the whole day but you never know how busy the crossing will be with ALL the BANKSY forum members queuing to get in. ;D
I went in in the afternoon and left after 8 and found it difficult to get transport[back and had to walk some of the way before being given a lift by a very nice buss driver for nothing to the main rd to hail a cab.
My advice is DO NOT LEAVE TOO LATE IN THE DAY FROM BETHLEHEM to go back to ISRAEL
I don't know of any hotels in Bethlehem it'self I know some of the artists who may be back now could have stayed there but the best and SAFEST bet would be Tel Aviv an hours taxi drive from the boarder at a cost of approx 300 to 400 sheckels THERE ARE APPROX 7.40 sheckles to the pound) or Jeruslem which is a short drive away don't know how much taxi fair there is a bus to Jerulslem fromthe boarder but they are VERY INFREQUENT and CANNOT BE TRUSTED for TIMING

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by digdog on Dec 6, 2007 13:15:16 GMT 1, Great post Vazie!
Looks like you beat me to it. I was there on Tuesday night and Simon said a couple of people had been there yesterday which I guess was you. I agree with everything you say and it was a great experience. Going at night through a deserted check point into the unknown is a little bit disconcerting but added to the experience. Anyway, I arrived in the evening having been told by POW that based on past experience it would be open. Imagine how gutted I was to arrive and see that it was closed. Anyway, I got onto POW in London and spoke to Dora who made a few calls and they came back later and opened up form me, so huge ++++ for Dora again and to Simon and the others present.
While waiting for the guys to come back a taxi driver took me up to the wall and the stuff they have done there is awesome. In addition to the images shown on the POW SG site, Faile and others have been to work there. Faile have done a couple of huge pieces, one of which is boxers which must be at least 5m high. Banksy stuff is dotted around the town and I managed to catch most of it. How choked was I that I forgot my camera, so I hope POW will upload the images that aren't on the site yet. The Faile Patricks and others were in the gallery and were in the middle of spraying up some great new stuff and I hear that other artists will be coming in and out on an on-going basis.
All in all a great experience and I would urge anyone to attend. A lot of the work is pretty pricey, but just to go there is a hell of an experience. I only had limited time and regret that I couldn't spend longer and am reflecting on items I would have loved to add to the collection but didn't have time to consider properly (not sure the bank would have lent me the money anyway). I went for the trolleys...Thanks to POW Banksy and everyone involved in a brilliant and worthwhile show which should raise a fortune for good causes.. ;D ;D
