Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by becksaboo on Dec 6, 2007 14:05:05 GMT 1, welcome to the forum digdog, what a great first post!! love hearing individual stories of the experience, shame you forgot the camera. would be great if someone did one massive long photo of lods of images pasted together of the wall. Then hopefully the wall can get knocked down.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by ejvaze on Dec 6, 2007 14:38:07 GMT 1, Great post Vazie! Looks like you beat me to it. I was there on Tuesday night and Simon said a couple of people had been there yesterday which I guess was you. I agree with everything you say and it was a great experience. Going at night through a deserted check point into the unknown is a little bit disconcerting but added to the experience. Anyway, I arrived in the evening having been told by POW that based on past experience it would be open. Imagine how gutted I was to arrive and see that it was closed. Anyway, I got onto POW in London and spoke to Dora who made a few calls and they came back later and opened up form me, so huge ++++ for Dora again and to Simon and the others present. While waiting for the guys to come back a taxi driver took me up to the wall and the stuff they have done there is awesome. In addition to the images shown on the POW SG site, Faile and others have been to work there. Faile have done a couple of huge pieces, one of which is boxers which must be at least 5m high. Banksy stuff is dotted around the town and I managed to catch most of it. How choked was I that I forgot my camera, so I hope POW will upload the images that aren't on the site yet. The Faile Patricks and others were in the gallery and were in the middle of spraying up some great new stuff and I hear that other artists will be coming in and out on an on-going basis. All in all a great experience and I would urge anyone to attend. A lot of the work is pretty pricey, but just to go there is a hell of an experience. I only had limited time and regret that I couldn't spend longer and am reflecting on items I would have loved to add to the collection but didn't have time to consider properly (not sure the bank would have lent me the money anyway). I went for the trolleys...Thanks to POW Banksy and everyone involved in a brilliant and worthwhile show which should raise a fortune for good causes.. ;D ;D
Hi digdog well done for getting there YES IT WAS US the day before
and YES we had the interesting experience of getting through the deserted checkpoint late at night, Getting out rather than getting in. In fact I had a few words with the surly female security guard and a male guard had to come along and defuse the situation with me, I think i was about to BLOW ;D
So you arrived in the Evening you obviously forgot that they are 2hrs ahead of us.
As I said to all those thinking of going GO EARLY IN THE DAY and leave EARLY to avoid the deserted checkpoint. It gets cold out there in the evening.
We also had a look at the wall and would have like to have had a longer look.
However the Church of the Nativity has to be a must place to visit. Lots of art in there BUT all a few 1000 years old, well from the 3rd and 4th Century's we went down to the cave under the Orthodox church and saw the REAL manger.
We also saw the Banksys dotted around the town.
My favorite Banksy which was on the side of a house was the Dove of Peace the same as on the canvas at the Ghetto. Unfortunately we didn't take too many pictures of the wall or around the place as when we arrived it was right in the middle of the Hamas celebrations for the prisoners that Israel had released that day. The place was swarming with men on foot and on the back of trucks waving flags, the square was full with young men and loud music fireworks being let off and most worrying of all automatic gun shot being fired into the air
Well we took sanctuary in the church until things died down.
Having said all that we never felt under threat at any time the Palestinians were really nice to us.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by digdog on Dec 6, 2007 16:39:51 GMT 1, gozgoz have pm'd you.
Thanks Becksaboo, I tend to follow the rule that if I don't have anything worth saying I keep my mouth shut, but the experience was enough to overcome my shy boy instincts...
Vazie
Good tip about time of day to visit. Apart from the ghetto being closed I had to shout at the checkpoint for someone to let us in...
Look forward to seeing who got what if anything after 24th. I was concerned that Simon said the auction wasn't sealed bids, but having read the site it looks as though it should be so don't know exactly whats going on???

My friend in Bethlehem said the starting price for artwork there is $100,000... is that true?? I would love the Aiko painting, but I'm a long way off having that amount of $$.

NOT True not on on my price list which was not complete as not all the art had arrived when I was there. the lowest price I could see was $200 US dollars for a Gee Vaucher piece
However these are only starting prices and I am sure will end up at the high end After all it is for Charity

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by becksaboo on Dec 7, 2007 1:54:55 GMT 1, yeah frankie as i said in the other thread, the art i'm impressed with is on the wall not what's in the show. I think the artists have put my thought into what's gone out onto the street and is viewed by thousands rather than what's going to be viewed by a select few.
although i don't know what prints are going to be released, i think banksy is making a statement by not releasing a new image (am talking about the trolleys and the flag) as that way it focuses the attention on the actual point of the show.
the best work in the show is by the local artists in my opinion but i do like the bast and insect stuff.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by Cocteau 101 on Dec 7, 2007 1:58:51 GMT 1, Hi Frankie
I like bits and pieces but not all. Good to see some local representation. Not keen on the Dove to be honest, I like the message just not a massive fan of the image. I like the Angel Throwing Hearts best and the Slingshot Rat - a rat is always a classic.
However, I really admire POW for doing this in Bethlehem, despite all the comments posted on here about the politics of the situation, the need to help locally is important. It must be a fuckin nightmare for the kids growing up in that environment.
But yeh I like bits but not all.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by gozgoz on Dec 10, 2007 12:45:41 GMT 1, Gozgoz here. Writing from the beach in tel aviv.
Will write more when I come back and not having to type with my thumbs.
All I wanna say is that the art really is overshadowed by everything else here. The people, the life, the desert, the political situation. Come here talk to the people, talk to the taxi drivers, go to the desert. I spent 6 hrs doing all that and at about one, my driver asked if I wanted to head to the ghetto. And to be honest, at that point in time, I forgot that the ghetto was why I came here.
I didn't like any of the art in the ghetto and all the art on the walls of the street, its all been posted around.
But I'll urge anyone to come over just for the experience.
And the fantastic kebabs.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by gozgoz on Dec 10, 2007 13:04:54 GMT 1, I hope I don't get negged for this but I really didn't see anything I liked at SG. The faile was disappointing. The banksy was well... Banksy. Micallef I've never liked. Erm. Nothing.
I like ericailcaines and sam3's works on the walls though.
But as I said, the art ended up being really secondary in my visit.
Tried looking for other forum members but didn't see anyone there save for an italian news crew.

I think I went also at time of my life (ie now) where I just broke up and some other krap stuff are happening to my life. And going there really did put my life into perspective. And I'm not usually very religious but seeing the church of nativity did strike a chord in me.
And yes. I'm dead tired. I slept for 16 hours last night! Gonna head to the airport now...
I'll plus your one when I get back. I can't seem to smite/exhalt on blackberry.

i wish i could go.....
so yes i am basing my opinions on what i've seen online which obviously isn't going to do the work justice.
all i'm saying from what i've seen is that the most impressive thing is that they've gone over there- the art is secondary. the stuff on the street is the most impressive thing to me, the stuff for sale is secondary which is how it should be. i'm sure if it was in a different context i'd feel differently about it but for me the art pales into insignificance considering the situation.
i really like some of the work but not all of it- but then everyone has different tastes.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by alsbabar on Dec 10, 2007 14:22:34 GMT 1, ok so you dont like some of the art, that is your opinion, and one that i respect, however, when you look at the art in its environment, like the Dove on 10 by 15 foot wall on a prominent street, in the middle of Bethlehem, you cannot help but feel it is actually a beautiful piece of work, not because of the aesthetics of it, but also the message - and I guarantee you this, all of the work have the same impact. Lets not forget also the art for sale is primary, as the money raised goes to help the local community - and that is what this project is about

in no way was i criticizing what they're doing out there, i think it's amazing and i hope they make as much money as possible as well as raise awareness.
