Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by hypovalaemic on Dec 6, 2007 16:05:12 GMT 1, Am I right in thinking that the Kelsey Brookes print will not be the "Ganesh as Rejection" seeing that the canvas is on display at SG. I can't remember an original AND a print being available on the same release ??
I was looking forward to the Ganesh Rejection, but you're probably right. I do hope its not the same print he was selling through lab101 (poor by his standards).

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by anthoz on Dec 3, 2007 11:25:18 GMT 1, Guys As everyone here has been so helpful since joining the board i thought it would be a nice idea to help anyone who may be going to the ghetto and also to start a thread about any tips people can offer about travelling to bethlehem
As a regular traveller to Israel and for those who may wish to know here are some helpful travel tips to start off the thread....
1. anyone not living in London can get direct flights to israel with Thomson travel. their website is Thomsonfly.com. The flights go from Manchester direct to telaviv on thursday and sunday everyweek. its the only way to fly direct outside of london and flights can be as low as 200 return. its about 4 and a half hours direct 2. those who do make it to Israel need to take serious note of the airport security and this is not to be underestimated. The isrealis take their homeland security to be the most important thing in the universe. If you havent been to isreal before and you are not jewish you WILL get grilled at the airport. possibly in a private room and possibly for a while. In my experience you really need to show them an address of where you are planning to stay. If you say you dont know or that you are here too visit the west bank you are likely to raise more eyebrows. The best thing to say is that you are a tourist, visiting the sights etc. During any questioning be as serious as they are, nervous laughter sometimes makes things more intense. If you take a laptop etc with you expect this to come under scrutiny also. 3. most poeple will speak lots of english so dont worry about that. once there food etc is cheap and as well as shekels most people will deal in dollars for bigger things like hotel rooms etc so its good to take some of those. 4. contrary to popular belief the country is quite chilled. nice people, excellent food and great roads and trains 5. the weather is dependant on where you are going, at this time of year Bethlehem/Jerusalem will be cold, and i mean cold, it can snow in december easily. however at the dead see it will still be 80 degrees plus, so make sure your wardrobe befits where you will be travelling too
hope all of this helps and for those of you that go enjoy. p.s. i cant go but i have my spies out there already, i beleive the queue consists of 3 goats and a falafel salesman.
EDIT.....if you have passport stamps form other places such as jordan/egypt/dubai this can be problematic. form the isreali point of view they will want to understand why you are there, a traveller who has visited places that harbour threats to them will come under more questioning. its better to travel with a clean passport. much as if going to dubai with israel passport stamps can have its problems. they will still let you in in the end i would have thought but you really do need to consider this first. there really are no guarantees or rules here just general trends, it depends on the political climate at the time you travle and recent activity. just do not underestimate how serious these things are taken. It makes travelling to the US seem like getting into your local pub
EDIT2: top hint..... if in isreal go to max brenners for dinner, you wont regret it branch addresses for isreal are listed on this page
www.maxbrenner.com/branches.html

Jordan isn't a prob....just don't try to go to Syria if you've been to Israel/Palestine.
EDIT: Yes I tried, I never got an Isreali stamp but got a jordanian border crossing stamp whic indicated I went to Palestine, hey ho...have to get a new passport!

Had to wait an hour an a half when he was being questioned. Expect the worst if you've been to a Arab country and probably don't say your visiting Bethlehem.

Would echo what Anthoz has said about security. The grilling my girlfriend and I got was intense. They also searched everything we had painstakingly. Heaven knows what they are going to think of hundreds of people walking around with long cardboard tubes!!

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by kiy on Dec 3, 2007 12:25:24 GMT 1, Hmmm..
Problamatic.. I have Egypt, Dubai & Abu Dhabi as the last three stamps in my passport.
My bother has Saudi Arabia stamps also...
So should we go for clean passports?
Palestine has been somewhere I have always wanted to visit and having the Ghetto in Bethlehem is an added reason to go to the West Bank.
The hope we can pray our Eid prayers in Al Aqsa Mosque is reason enough to go.
We want to visit Jerusalem first, does anyone know how long the trip to Bethlehem is from Jerusalem. Will there be any issues taking a taxi or bus from Bethlehem to Jerusalem.
Anyone else going from the UK? Send me a PM...

On getting from Jersualem to Bethlehem this info is a few years old but was my experience. Israeli buses and taxis will NOT take anyone in to the West Bank. You should also not drive an Israeli numberplated car in the the west bank.
The only way to get in there when I was there was to take an arab bus from the arab bus station in Jerusalem. This bus station is chaotic and difficult to deal with but you will find people willing to help you if you ask around.
Like I say this info is a few years out of date so someone with more recent experience may know how to deal with it now.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by craigf on Dec 3, 2007 13:35:34 GMT 1, Interesting change of location, somewhat more challenging and I would like to know how many ppl POW think will attend! Would be very funny if there is still a very long queue and they only have a couple of prints available in the shop.
Re stamps in the passport as it has been said above this depends on the situation, but generally Arab countries looking unfavourably on Israli stamps and vice versa. I had to get a second passport, but the controls on having two passports have tightened considerably over the last few years including an itinery showing why two are necessary signed by a lawyer etc. Also turn around times aren't that great so it's probably not an option
Israli customs are very thorough even more so when leaving the country as they have the view the plane is then full of fuel and can make more damage if sabotaged. To indicate how anal they can be a collegue had a bit of broken plastic on his suit case and they were shining torches down it and kept him for more than 2 hours asking lots of questions, which as he is Japanese weren't so easy to answer in English.
One positive for those who do go it will be nice and warm so no need to huddle in shop doorways ;D
