Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by johnas on Dec 3, 2007 13:38:26 GMT 1, Its only a short bus ride from Jerusalem, there is a bus station in East Jerusalem that I think goes there and it is quite cheap, trust me it wont be hard or difficult to get there. Good luck
taken from wikitravel....
Nearly all travellers arrive via Jerusalem. Since Bethlehem is administered by the Palestinian Authority, an Israeli military checkpoint stands on the road connecting the two locations. All travelers are subject to rigorous questioning and searches. If checkpoint security is stepped up (usually owing to local disturbances or tension), buses and service taxis may be delayed or cancelled entirely.
By bus Arab bus 21 runs from the Arabic bus station at the Damacus Gate ("Bab el-'Amoud") in East Jerusalem via Beit Jala to Bethlehem. The average trip length is 40 minutes and costs 5,50 NIS. Shared taxis (sherut/servees) leave from Damascus Gate and manage the trip in 20 minutes.
Bus 124 also leaves from Damascus Gate, it costs 3.50 NIS and runs directly to the Bethlehem Checkpoint and back. You must travel through the checkpoint as you enter and exit Bethlehem. Make sure to bring a passport, and prepare for what can be a lengthy hassle. From the checkpoint, you can either walk or take a Taxi to the center of Bethlehem. It is no longer than half an hour walk and less than a 10 NIS cab ride to Manger Square.
On foot
Devoted pilgrims often prefer to walk (and in happier times there has been a large procession at Christmas), at a brisk pace the trip is doable in 2 hours but there are plenty of ups and downs along the way and the summer heat is fearsome.

I am gonna book my ticket today, for the 18th. If anyone else is going around this time send me a PM.

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by BunnyBoiler on Dec 3, 2007 14:08:35 GMT 1, Hmmm.. Problamatic.. I have Egypt, Dubai & Abu Dhabi as the last three stamps in my passport. My bother has Saudi Arabia stamps also... So should we go for clean passports? Palestine has been somewhere I have always wanted to visit and having the Ghetto in Bethlehem is an added reason to go to the West Bank. The hope we can pray our Eid prayers in Al Aqsa Mosque is reason enough to go. We want to visit Jerusalem first, does anyone know how long the trip to Bethlehem is from Jerusalem. Will there be any issues taking a taxi or bus from Bethlehem to Jerusalem. Anyone else going from the UK? Send me a PM...
The problem is if you want to go back to an Arab country more then getting in to Palestine. Most Arab countries like Saudi will not let people in if they have a Israel stamp in the passport.

true - alot of Arab countries will not allow you in with israel on your passport. And yes, it does snow in jerusalem in winter and yes, security will be tough, but at least you'll feel safe when you fly (unlike most other flights) or feel that your bus has a chance of not being blown up.
And remember - beards = fanaticism (that part is a joke, but now I think about it...)

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by alsbabar on Dec 3, 2007 15:21:29 GMT 1, Jordan isn't a prob....just don't try to go to Syria if you've been to Israel/Palestine. EDIT: Yes I tried, I never got an Isreali stamp but got a jordanian border crossing stamp whic indicated I went to Palestine, hey ho...have to get a new passport! Thanks... is it a problem the other way? I'm seriously thinking of the Ghetto, but also Jordan next year
Mike you can request that you have the Israeli entry/exist stamp on a piece of paper attached to your passport. Then tear it off when you come home

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by monstris on Dec 3, 2007 15:54:04 GMT 1, sorry to correct but read my initial post it will be cold at this time of year it often snows in jerusalem in december just spoke to my friend who is at work in jerusalem and he says its now quite cold, jumpers etc weather so thats the latest
And the skies are cloudless so the evenings are FREEZING.
Bring a Bible in your hand carry and pretend to be a christian zealot visiting the holy land. works everytime for me. and yes, a second passport is advisable. and don't talk about where you're going in the terminal at heathrow and on the plane. there are ears in them airways.
ah...if you can bring yourself to fly El Al, that makes security on the other side at Tel Aviv a little bit easier...but you will be funding the state airline. BA is good. Regular flights, and not too much hassle (considering).
Remember what I said on other posts about dirtying your passport. Don't think you can then hop on to a holiday in Damascus afterwards...and an Israeli stamp makes getting into Malaysia tricky...and Sudan is a definite no go.
Oh...and keep that little bit of paper they give you on entry...you'll need it.

There is a good place to stay called the manger... www.mangerandstable.com or ring up and speak with Mary or Joseph

Banksy's Santas Ghetto Bethlehem, by gozgoz on Dec 5, 2007 23:40:17 GMT 1, Is it an urban legend but someone told me once to tell the Israel dudes to stamp the Israel stamp on a sheet of paper separately so u can travel to muslim states after that.
Is that true and is it doable?
I want to go to the ghetto but i also wanna see dubai and travel to my neighbouring country of malaysia for the food there!

Don't want to sneeze on that warning but life goes on despite SG and this sort of thing crops up all the time. Most of the time it's ignored by the international media as it's so everyday and commonplace (the things I could tell you...).
And something inside me tells me that these events are part of the point about staging SG in Bethlehem.
