Blu 🇮🇹 Bologna Street Art • Print Release • Art For Sale, by vandamme on Nov 15, 2020 2:32:42 GMT 1, Thanks for the lowdown, that all makes sense you are on point and a few things I had not considered.
I remember when POW added blu to the rooster, there was a little excitement, I bought prints, framed a couple pieces and kept the others in portfolio. The pieces I framed I eventually gave away about 5 years ago 🤦🏽♂️ but still have a couple so all good
Since when did ERICAILCANE BLU prints start selling for so much? has to happen some time. 1. blu is one of the originals - from when street art went 2.0 (and blew up via the internet, primarily on wooster collective in the early 2000s). (a) his peers are Banksy, Os Gemeos, JR, Swoon, Shepherd Fairey (*) they were all featured in ART IN THE STREETS at MoCA (LA), though Blu's mural was censored before the exhibit opened (**) blu, JR & Os Gemeos were also featured in Street Art at Tate Modern (***) banksy famously painted the west bank barrier wall & in 2007 invited blu & Swoon to put up work on that wall (part of santa's ghetto 2007) & JR also (****) blu's street painting based animations ( muto & big bang big boom) are singular and sublime, whimsical and telling, insightful, politically engaged (b) the above listed peers have all been expanding their practices since the 2000s, producing a lot of collectible works (and also public works) (c) blu has been expanding his mural practice across that time frame as well ( blublu.org/b/walls/), making many building-sized politically engaged murals (but creating no works for the market - nothing for sale since 2012). as detailed in his recent book of 15 years of building sized murals ( blublu.org/b/2018/02/21/minima-muralia-out-now/) and highlighted ( thisiscolossal.com) 2. blu's work is extremely rare (a) across his career he made less than 2000 editioned prints (in total, counting every screen print from every edition, and the etchings). (b) small drawings, and a handful of large drawings, from his sketchbooks are his only originals released to market (c) he has released 0 collectible works (editioned prints or drawings) over the past 8 years in fact, that rate still feels like a bargain to me given his significance (and in contrast to the market success of his peers).

Blu 🇮🇹 Bologna Street Art • Print Release • Art For Sale, by mmmike on Nov 16, 2020 4:37:06 GMT 1, So before all you speculators get all excited that Blu will be the (next get rich quick) Banksy hold your horses. The limited nature of Blu's sellable art is exactly why it will never be worth big money. Art markets are driven by those who have financial interests. There just isn't enough money to be made for the market to be propped up as is required to achieve crazy prices. So just walk away and leave the Blu stuff those who are quite content to enjoy his work knowing it will never make great investments.

"The limited nature of Blu's sellable art is exactly partly why it will never be worth big money" is more like it (in addition to blu being genius pioneer of street art 2.0). are you familiar with matthew wong? the art market loves a limited supply it can corner, particularly of artists collected by museums like V&A. i know JR has collected Blu (as shown in his 60 minutes interview), and expect that Banksy has as well.
it will be good that Blu's secondary art market sets significant values for his works. as Simon de Pury noted in the Price of Everything: "art and money have always gone hand in hand. it is very important for good art to be very expensive. you only protect things that are valuable. if something has no financial value, people don't care, they will not give it the necessary protection. the only way to make sure that cultural artifacts survive is for them to have a commercial value." Blu's wall sized murals, and animations like muto and big bang big boom, are as smart and innovative as anything Banksy has made.
and i am not a recent Blu "speculator" - have been collecting (and living with) his works for more than a decade.

Blu 🇮🇹 Bologna Street Art • Print Release • Art For Sale, by viz on Nov 16, 2020 8:39:21 GMT 1, This must be one of the most hyped threads of the whole forum...
I always thought (and still think by the way) that true collectors would like prices to stay low, whereas speculators (or investors if you prefer) want prices to go up.
...and I try to keep in mind blu left the so called art world mainly because the latter ones are the majority.
PS: let's also bear in mind Simon de Pury is an auctioneer and merchant. So his incomes depend on the values of the artworks, easy to understand his words then, it's about money not about art.

Blu 🇮🇹 Bologna Street Art • Print Release • Art For Sale, by battente on Nov 19, 2020 22:25:18 GMT 1, I definitely love Blu's print, all of them, Il Nulla as well. 3k is definitely a huge amount of money but at the end he is not so "famous" yet, and once some galleries will decide to push him into the market we will look back saying "damn 3k, why I didn't buy it!" It's out of my hands but if I could afford it I would enjoy it on my wall and it could be a good investment.

Just because he is not into big auction house like Banksy dosnt meant he is less important in the urban art culture.
I asked few years back for a Blu work in a well known Gallery in London. They simple replied to me "-Blu is not working anymore as an artist" that was an odd reply but makes you understand as, sadly, the art market works.
Blu is an Artist and , unfortunately for us, he hates the art market and collectors too.
