'Bear in Mind' by Luke Chueh in Beacon,NY, by Tiki on May 17, 2016 9:47:08 GMT 1, Is it just me or are artists/galleries/agents starting to take this piss with all this collaboration work we are seeing lately?
Art to me, seems to be fast becoming like the music industry. It's like a new "up and coming" musician featuring on a beyonce, Kanye West, Maroon 5 track. Is it not simply a way to propel someone into the limelight, in order for them to become a new industry cash cow by association?
Best case scenario; we get to hear/see new talent that we otherwise may not have seen/heard of. Worst case scenario; we get spammed to death by a load of dog poo that isn't fit for purpose in order to squeeze as much money out of us.
Sorry to hijack your thread :/

This type of show is common in the Kid Robot / vinyl collecting world.

Sorry to hijack your thread :/ your post comes across as very ignorant. based on your comment i would say: 1) you don't understand what kind of show this was. 2) you assume the artists involved are "up and coming" because you are unfamiliar with them. this was NOT a collaboration show, the artists involved are NOT "new talent" and this type of show is NOT something new. the blank bear head was developed by Luke as a platform specifically for other artists to customize. platforms like "blanks" (which are like blank canvases) are a very common thing in the art toy/design toy/vinyl toy world. this was a bear head show specifically curated by both Clutter and Luke, and most of the artists invited are pretty well known, and some of which aren't even part of the art toy/design toy/vinyl toy world. these kinds of custom group shows are very popular and have been for years.
Much like the Fabrege Egg Hunt in NYC. Blank eggs were supplied to artists/designers etc news.artnet.com/art-world/video-faberge-hatches-new-yorks-greatest-art-easter-egg-hunt-10415

Why is my post ignorant? Because it doesn't embrace the kind of commercial bullshit that manipulates the many, to line the pockets of the few? Or is it because you have an agenda and consider this format of "show" will be the only way you as an artist can break through....?
Regardless, your post comes across as very deluded.
1.) I completely understand what type of show this is. My comments were perhaps not directed solely at this show, more so that it's the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back". If you were to look at this through the eyes of a gallery representing X artist involved, would you not see this as an opportunity to increase the profile of X artist by association? Considered in terms of footfall; the more people that see it the more people will buy it (theoretically).
2.) Again perhaps a bad use of the phrase "up and coming" but the point remains the same - It creates footfall from those that know one or more of those involved but perhaps isn't as familiar with the others. If you prefer; credibility by association. X is good, I like X. Y is associated with X, I like X therefore I should probably like Y. How much is Y please?
This is a collaboration show considering it is the combination of two or more people working together on the same thing. It's the definition of "collaboration". Or are you using your own special dictionary?
No this is not something new, no-one said it was, what on earth has that got to do with anything? If we're going to go completely off topic; genocide isn't new either.
You mention "platforms like "blanks" (which are like blank canvases) are a very common thing in the art toy/design toy/vinyl toy world" If this is not profiteering by association then why not use a blank canvas rather than the bears head that is so iconic of Luke C?
My opinion is let an artist's work speak for itself rather than propping it up with someone else's.
