"Harambe" The Gorilla Art Tribute , by Coach on Jun 1, 2016 13:26:26 GMT 1, When you say "senseless killing" do you mean because the gorilla shouldn't have been shot and the boy should have been rescued in another way, or because it shouldn't have been in captivity in the first place, or because the parents/zoo should have been more careful to ensure that a child couldn't fall in to the enclosure? I've just watched the video on bbc, having read this thread. Once the boy was alone with the gorilla in the enclosure, tragic as it may be, I can't see that the zoo had any alternative but to shoot the gorilla. It was dragging the boy through the water like a doll. Surely it could have killed the boy at any moment. I guess that opens up arguments about whether we, as a species do/should treat human life as more important than animal life. I do, but I appreciate that others may feel differently. Nonetheless it is very sad that the gorilla was killed. The only animal in my art is a rat. I'll post a picture tonight.

"Harambe" The Gorilla Art Tribute , by Wearology on Jun 1, 2016 13:39:41 GMT 1, When I say "senseless" I mean that it was "senseless" in all aspects of the word, especially the parents losing site of their 3 year old not 4 year old child long enough for him to climb a 3 foot fence. As usual this tragedy has opened up so many social issues. The US media is now trying to make it a racial issue and the family is also weighing their legal options on suing the Zoo or the organization that saved their child's life. My personal opinion that I assume no one cares about not even me is that if the Gorilla was already alone with the boy for 10 minutes than he wasn't going to kill the kid and they should have tranquilized the Gorilla and if the Gorilla showed any aggression toward the child than they could have killed it immediately anyway. I know what most people are saying, if it was my kid I would have wanted the gorilla to be shot right away and than they would say it would never happen since I watch my kids and this mother was neglectful. So instead of getting all political, racial & social on an art forum I decided that we should share our appreciation of endangered animals in art by posting "get out your endangered animals art for the lads" thread

Fair play wear. I wasn't trying to be political. I was merely interested what you meant. It doesn't surprise me that the family are considering suing, if what I am told of the US legal system is correct. Ours is going the same way, and I expect that a UK family would be considering the same, I'm sorry to say. I can't fathom how this could be interpreted as a racial issue. What angle are they adopting? I had not known that the animal and the boy had been together for ten minutes. That wasn't clear from the video I watched. Maybe a tranquilliser could have been used. But I do also appreciate that they had to make a pretty quick decision, and I think if I were them I would have adopted the same approach, I'm sorry to say. Imagine the uproar if the child had been killed. If you would rather I left the thread just for pictures of art, I'm ok with that. I just thought it was potentially an interesting discussion point that you raised.

"Harambe" The Gorilla Art Tribute , by Wearology on Jun 1, 2016 13:59:45 GMT 1, Discussion is always good and I was hoping to encourage it with the posting. The elephant is a collaboration between LA2 & a former forum artist member Saint / Schlomo. The racial angle is that the parents are African American and some of the TV Heads are saying that if it was a white kid no one would blame the parents and bring up the parents past.
