America and guns.........again !!!, by onetwothree on Jun 13, 2016 12:06:27 GMT 1, Hopefully we can decrease our presence abroad in 2017 (that is how I am voting). It's someone else's turn to protect the strait of hormuz. ย Europe should be able to handle its own security from terrorism without America's intervention. ย Good luck with Iran. Any chance you could reduce your fast food presence abroad as well?
But more Buffolo wings please

America and guns.........again !!!, by NYart on Jun 13, 2016 12:53:37 GMT 1, And why are they War zones exactly ? because the US Govt at the behest of their corporate allies create them in order to profit a) by selling weapons and b) by rebuilding the infrastructure they wreck. The fact that youngย disillusioned mentally ill brainwashed republicans can gain access to AR 15 semi automatic weapons and take out their frustrations against minorities, needs to be tackled at source.
I don't disagree that the intervention in the Middle East contributed greatly to where we are at today, that's not to say there weren't serious issues there previously. But that doesn't change the fact that both Europe and the US needs to be careful with who they're allowing in.
Young, disillusioned, mentally ill, and brainwashed republicans? Those are the criteria you want to ban guns from? I'm all for making sure those diagnosed with a mental disorder are not allowed to obtain guns, but its exaggeration and taking it too far like that, that makes gun supporters draw the line earlier than it probably should be drawn. Instead of being realistic and practical to what the problem is (mental illness with guns) it becomes about competent law abiding citizens and their guns, and that's why nothing gets accomplished.

An American born and bred citizen, schooled on the hatred that Fox News spews out day in, day out, educated by the American education system, a card carrying republican with ambitions to be a police officer, walks into a store, buys enough arms and ammunition to start a small war, slaughters 50 of his own fellow nationals, and you want to talk about IS ?

Does Fox News, the American education system, or the Republican Party encourage American citizens to shoot up a club? No. So when an individual chooses to carry out a terrorist attack in the name of a terrorist group who accepts the credit of course the discussion should be about their influence.
99% of the America educated, Fox News watching, republicans do not do this. So when one does and you blame everyone besides the individual your doing the exact same thing as those blaming Muslims as a whole for the extremists actions.

Yes
This is terrorism, this is ISIL.
This is happening world wide on a daily basis. Deadliest mass shooting in US History but not the world.
I just think in 'this case', all this talk about American gun laws are irrelevant, its ISIL people should be discussing.

True, this is not the right time to blame Americas gun laws. But to focus on the real issue of terrorism.

America and guns.........again !!!, by Daniel Silk on Jun 13, 2016 14:24:47 GMT 1, Yes us US citizens are aware of the issue. My concern is the reason behind your posting of this. Are us Americans supposed to praise you UK residents? Honestly, what the fuuck is your need to post this? Honestly, I really want to know. Are you pulling the 'our country is better than yours' angle? Because this type of comment/post is not helping anyone. Maybe you should stick to the art. As a former guardian who chose to step down. I'm seriously disappointed in your actions. YOU have a lot of power on this forum, you need to use it more wisely. I have power? To do what? Post on a thread? Start a thread? Errrrrrrr isn't that just the same as 21,000+ other members of this forum.
You have a voice! Use it to post your opinion on the subject.

America and guns.........again !!!, by Coach on Jun 13, 2016 14:30:49 GMT 1, I hear people on here advocating the right to carry weapons to defend themselves and their property. I don't understand why that extends to military semi automatic assault riffles. What could a member of the public ever want with one of those?

When it happened in France there wasn't a mention of their gun laws, different laws same tragedy. What a surprise, criminals don't follow laws! Completely different scenario, the Paris attacks were a well planned and orchestrated terrorist attack on France. Orlando looks like it is a mentally unstable frustrated lone gunman who was able to walk into a shop and buy a semi automatic weapon and commit an horrendous hate crime against the LGBT community. The most open and inclusive liberal minded group of people on the planet. The LGBT community have been under attack in America since Stonewall and though obvious progress has been made, there's a long way to go. This attack was made by an American citizen. This isn't an attack on Republican values. It's a reflection of them. There are enough deserving victims to mourn here without our worrying about NRA supporters.
Anyway, enough anger and hate, our thoughts are with the LGBT community the world over, and particularly with anyone and everyone affected by this.

The creation of stricter punishments for violent acts based on a victim's sexual orientation is a fairly recent development. It wasn't until 2009, when Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act that this was the case. The law added perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disabilities as protected classes under existing federal hate crimes law.
Previously, the law only protected victims of violence based on race, nationality, ethnicity, and religion.
The law, which was included as an amendment to a broader defense spending bill, was not passed easily. In the House and Senate, a majority of Republicans voted against the amendment.
Here is a full list of the members of Congress who are still part of the legislative body and voted against the amendment to add the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act to the defense spending bill.

America and guns.........again !!!, by NYart on Jun 13, 2016 15:07:04 GMT 1, So it was a mentally unstable lone gunman who committed the act. Yet it's the republican party's fault? You could and should just as easily blame ISIS since they hold even more extreme views against the LGBT community, especially considering he pledged allegiance to them, where do you even see anything to do with him being republican? The republicans may not support the LGBT's but they don't encourage violence against them.
If you have a bone to pick with the republicans or don't like trump that's fine but forcing a connection where there is none just discredits the rest of your arguments.

America and guns.........again !!!, by Wearology on Jun 13, 2016 15:23:52 GMT 1, Every political party in the US is exactly the same. If you have some money you can own your own politician and if you have a real lot of money you can own their who political party. I thought Trump had some interesting ideas that would shake up the status quo in the beginning, but than he kept on talking and the stupidity outweighed everything else. The Clinton Machine is a true force and the only way anyone else occupies the White House for the next 4 to 8 years is if she gets indicted which we all know will never happen.

America and guns.........again !!!, by dreadnatty on Jun 13, 2016 15:27:21 GMT 1, Not that it matter what his political affiliation was but:
the guy was a terrorist, whether he was hard left or right, what does it matter. Would it 'been OK' had he worn a suicide vest? Those who want to kill people in the name of extremism will do so no matter what laws you enact. Drug laws are strict in the USA(some argue too much) yet anybody can still get the hardest of drugs virtually anywhere, anytime. Laws cannot solve all problems in a free society. Generalizations made by the left about the right are no better than generalizations that the right make of the left. This is precisely why nothing gets done.
That said, I will rarely be posting on here anymore as this forum has become intolerable. WAY too much political talk followed by talk about price, FS threads from brand new members and members refusing to state a price but rather OFFERS, pumping of artists etc.... There is no more talk/photos about art other than a handful of members. If anybody needs to reach me you can feel free to PM me or reach out via my IG:

America and guns.........again !!!, by .dappy on Jun 13, 2016 15:36:16 GMT 1, @martedanielsen LGBT: 'The most open and inclusive liberal minded group of people on the planet.'
... not sure about this sweeping statement ... there is a lot of disagreement amongst the LGBT community about trans-gender and other persons and I understand that the term is now LGBTIQ2 ... there are always arguements within and around any group of peoples ...
I like this sentence: 'Anyway, enough anger and hate, our thoughts are with the LGBT community the world over, and particularly with anyone and everyone affected by this.'

This saddens me dread, very much. I love your contributions. I hope you change your mind.

America and guns.........again !!!, by Hubble Bubble on Jun 13, 2016 17:21:20 GMT 1, One thing I can't figure out, having listened to all the discussion, is if allowing the citizens of a nation to carry weapons is designed to decrease the incidence of attack and murder by instilling a sense of fear into the perpetrator by the prospect of the potential victim being armed themselves, then how come this isn't happening in a country that has more guns than citizens? And how, if we extrapolate and work things to their natural conclusion, will increasing the availability of guns make the problem anything other than much worse.
For every single gun atrocity in the UK or Paris, there are hundreds in the USA. And I mean hundreds. It's surely not a defence of gun laws to say 'it happened in Paris'. It happens everywhere. Twice in Paris. Recently in Australia. It's happened four times that I can remember in my lifetime in the UK - Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland (which was a military incident, so not relevant to figures and stats on civilian gun laws, however horrific), Hungerford, Dunblane and Cumbria. So we've established that... yes, even in a country where gun laws are tight and ownership is restricted, it is possible to massacre people. Everyone accepts that. What I don't understand is how anyone can't see that easy access to weapons increases the likelihood of massacres happening. Actually, I'll change that. It guarantees the likelihood of massacres happening. I am at a loss as to why anyone would choose not to seek change from within a society that actively ensures its laws make mass slaughter easier to perpetrate within its borders.
A moment of thought too, for all those people affected by the tragedy. We have a LGBT club not too far from my village. It's 'Pink Punters' in Bletchley. And it's immaculately run. My daughters (both straight) go there, with their friends - male and female - from University and school. My mates go there. I'm a burly old rugby player. I go there. It's welcoming, fun and not a moment's trouble. We should all mourn an attack on our friends in this community, for it truly is an attack on us all.

It's all of those things combined, intolerance knows no bounds. Hate Crime, Terrorism, an attack on liberal values made possible in part by conservatives reluctance to prevent these people buying semi automatics at will. Hence the gun issue.

America and guns.........again !!!, by NYart on Jun 13, 2016 18:30:32 GMT 1, Here's a good article that shows another perspective to Americas murder rate. Everyone shows graphs comparing our gun violence/homicide rate vs Europe, and tries to infer the only difference is our gun laws so that must be the issue.

Thanks for posting that. That's fascinating context and data that I've frankly never seen. I've just always presumed we (US) were sky high death rates due to sky high gun ownership but those numbers do put it in a different shade of light. Perhaps I suffer from mainstream press fatigue but it does present a reasoned other side of the coin that I have never considered. I still hope we can do something about the ability of our citizens to access semi automatic weapons as the risk to the populace at large clearly outweighs any potential benefit (is there even one?) despite the context of data at that link.

That is the most fucked up twisting of "facts" I've ever read! Hilarious!! Saying you're not so bad as some pretty dangerous other countries is not a solution
Australia is the perfect example. Used to have a similar problem. Banned guns. Problem got better. It's really simple. And the number of people who saved themselves from an attack with their own gun... Hardly ever happens. Sorry.
