Art Wanted, by Fuzzyduck121 on Aug 1, 2011 12:31:05 GMT 1, I was really trying to avoid adding to this thread but I am at a total loss to understand the difference between this and the mass volumes of reproduction prints and posters available in any museum in the country. If I go to the guggenheim in new york and fall in love with a J pollock piece I have 2 choices; 1. Become a billionaire 2. buy an exact replica from the gift store on the way out, some replicas are the exact sizes of the smaller pieces and yes they are paper not canvas, however the Kandinsky replica prints are the same size as the originals though unsigned and unstamped.
If I see a Banksy piece on the wall that I like I also have 2 choices 1. Become slightly richer than I may ever be 2. Buy an exact replica from ebay stamped with COPY on the back though unsigned and stamped.
A classic artist hangs in the guggenheim, the gift store cashes in....a street artist hangs on street corners, the west country prince cashes in.
West country prince = the street artists verion of the cheapo souvenir and gift store.
If anyone else sees the issue with someone copying an artists work, whilst blatantly telling everyone its a copy, selling it cheaper as a copy and then stamping the word copy on it in massive red letters then perhaps they should call the estates of dali, picasso, kandinsky, warhol etc etc etc because the story is repeated across the globe.
Anyone who wishes to question the above theory is welcome to do so but should also perhaps click here first for an accurate case in point

Art Wanted, by mmmike on Aug 1, 2011 12:43:58 GMT 1, Its funny how nobody wants to buy the cheap canvases & the like on eBay, but as soon as an exact copy comes on the scene everyone wants one, clearly not just about the image then, Tell me, why don't they go the whole hog & do the blindstamp & numbering, it seems to me that as long as they have the word COPY on the back then it's legal. Then to go one step further they could do an exact copy of the COA & put the word copy on that somewhere out of sight. Then some people could really impress (fool) there friends. HEY I didn't say that! watch your quotes. -interesting rolexbanks, good stuff!... those buying may fancy deceiving "friends." Impressive indeed! Who's the fool? Having a fake may not bring what might be expected. Buyer Beware: Expect everyone will know you've got a fake, which begs the question: "why buy a crap fake when you could make your own art?" Can't wait for the next capitalist swine to jump in with rip-off "editions for fools" without the red COPY stamp. These fakes look like crap with the "idiot" stamp. -Give me a break... these suck, as do all copy fakes designed to manipulate the perceived or realized value of artwork. In this case... Banksy originals or editions (not fake) just got more valuable. Bit of an oxymoron, don't you think? -b②

Other than that, go to Banksy's website, download an image you like and print it off yourselves - rather than trying to justify your reasons/actions for buying a fake, and that is all they are - FAKES

Art Wanted, by Lunch Special on Aug 1, 2011 14:45:32 GMT 1, Question to all who say its ok to buy a fake banksy and hang it in the Real house you live in:
Would you buy your girl a fake diamond ring and tell her no one will know the difference? would you buy a fake rolex and wear it proudly defending the fact its fake and its just a watch? would you wear a fake pair of trainers to the gym? would you buy your daughter a fake gucci bag and after shes taunted in school tell her there just mad they dont have one? would you let your son wear a fake ralph lauren shirt to class to be ridiculed? do you see where im getting here..
This is a discussion based on principles, not just monetary but moral and intellectual by the way or artistic rights. Had the image been made to pay homage and not be an exact replica which if you havent noticed more and more have started popping up, but is it the same inks? that wont fade? the same paper? that wont curl? we know its definitely not the same stencils of years and years ago as the gangsta rat, so the feel and self respect of knowing the image on your wal was one tat was created under supervision and direction from the man himself is self sufficient to end my part in this discussion, but Just so you know, Banksy is not helping the world or paying for flights to do that street art you say you love so much all around the world with the money he ISNT getting from the illegal sale of reproduced artwork.
Go ask Oleg from VOINA if hanging a fake BANKSY in your house is ok
Principles is what's at case and point here, not the issue of loving an image..buy the real one and hide it, hang the fake one

fake diamond no, im buying a gift and will not hide behind a fake.
Id wear a fake Rolex if i really wanted to own one, which i don't, but i would not claim it to be real.
Unsure if you can get fake trainers but for the sake of 20 quid no need to purchase knock off's
If she wants a Gucci bag and at school she can thing again.
I remember the fake Ralphs going around at school. part of growing up good times.
If someone wants the image and dont care about bloody paper or ink and cant afford to get into the Banksy owners club,, then do this , why bloody not,

Art Wanted, by klyde on Aug 1, 2011 15:23:31 GMT 1, This is getting ridiculous.
The choice is simple.
You can either like a print that sold out in 2003, one that basically never comes up for sale, and even if it did would cost X thousands you really should be spending on something else, so you continue to look at it online or in a book, or you can just buy it for ยฃ50 and stick it on your wall.
The fact is they look exactly the same. Its not a cheap canvas. Its not a poster. End of.
I know what its worth. ยฃ50. Nothing more. It will never be worth anything more.
Considering the mental amount of cash changing hands for the crappy ยฃ5 petrol bomb POSTER, these are great value.
Itโs a copy. It even states COPY on it. Its not kidding on its made by POW.
Nobody is going to congratulate you on your death bed for your upstanding morals and principles when it comes to collecting Banksy!
Its just wall decoration. Not smug portfolio hoarding.

these should be about a tenner each . pay any more and you've been mugged.
can get some quality art for ยฃ50 .. check the ยฃ50 and under thread.

Psychologist Paul Bloom argues that human beings are essentialists -- that our beliefs about the history of an object change how we experience it, not simply as an illusion, but as a deep feature of what pleasure (and pain) is. here it is again if people missed it

hmmm... not exactly.
Thierry Guetta funded Banksy while in the US. Bankys is responsible for the creation of "Mr. Brainwash" & also the self destruction of Thierry Guetta as "Mr." the artist. Banksy clearly had a hand in what "Mr. Brainwash" released. "Chocolate Vandal", released by Brainwash was a superb example of how the boy from Bristol payed homage to his one and only stablemate... Nick Walker.
Anyone thinking I've got any Mr Brainwash (real or fake) to peddle, you've underestimated my motivation & you are sadly mistaken.
Respect to Banksy! one brilliant lad indeed!

i agree, however there is a big difference between supporting the artist by buying original pieces (even on secondary market) , than supporting your local market trader type by buying overpriced knock offs.

Art Wanted, by simonf on Aug 1, 2011 20:31:12 GMT 1, Agree with freeview, if you want the price of your original banksy prints to go down in value ( especially unsigned ) then buy these prints. Be very careful of what you wish for!
It's all money money money. If you have a collection of Banksy prints and they devalue... my poor heart is bleeding for you.
Most people can't afford thousands of pounds for a bit of paper. Probably most of the population of this country can't. And the fact people are spending thousand of pounds on prints, while others are struggling to feed their kids, somehow seems wrong Street art? street investment? Surely this is an art forum. Not and investment forum. If you worry about devaluation, then forget art buy gold.
And while you are bemoaning the decrease in value of your very expensive art investments, it might actually be possible, with these cheap reproductions, for a nurse (for example), paying back pay her tuition fees to actually have an amazing piece of art on her wall called "laugh now". Without having to go bankrupt to pay for one.
Or alternatively, I suppose, she could pay you several thousands of pounds for one of your precious "investment pieces"
just my opinion of course

Art Wanted, by boatyb on Aug 1, 2011 21:12:31 GMT 1, this is a healthy thread - let's not make it a discussion about haves and have nots....nothing to do with it...that's a red herring....
BTW - I have one signed print that most people do not like, but I am long banksy POSTERS (obtained free or for less than a tenner)...and proud...and still do not support this stuff in principle...
