Presumably Emin had a lot of say and wanted to do more portraits - or NPG wanted her to do some with them - and so that is what the new edition is made up of. And she can paint and sell whatever she pleases in her position and with her stature.
But from Counter Editions point of view they released a set of 10 portraits around Journey To Death in 2022 and before that a set of 8 for These Feelings Were True in 2020. It means most people who want an Emin portrait have one or can get access to one relatively easily. Aside from that I think there are better portraits from the previous sets than these ones. And I also think people prefer her landscape figure prints to these.
If the pricing above is right on the new ones I would still expect quite a few to shift until they hit around 5/6k and then stall.

Would expect them to sell the first tier or two when they go to single prints tomorrow cos for the size of print they are not expensive. And the issue of them looking similar is less of a problem if buying one. But I much prefer her figures lying down or in bed compared to the portraits.

Are y'all buying this because she's famous or do you really like the images? I am likely in the minority. I like the idea of Tracey Emin, just as I like the idea of Banksy. But I am not drawn to the vast majority of art created by either. Given that I donโt collect art as an investment, and given the prices of the few pieces by each that I do like, neither will be in my collection or displayed on my walls. Even though most artists donโt share the mystique or star power of Emins or Banksy, I can find art that I like much better, and for quite a bit less money. I appreciate what Emins represents to the history of art, and I adore Banksyโs politics, but I donโt have enough money or wall space to collect either. |
