Most famous for his coverage of the war in Cambodia, and about whom the film the Killing Fields was made. Had to leave the Cambodian journalist Dith Pran behind and for years didn't hear from him, but believed he would. Eventually they were reunited. A friend said of him (on the radio 4 obituary programme - Last Word) that he lived and worked on the basis that it was his role to "inflict the comfortable and comfort the inflicted".
