What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by met on Aug 1, 2016 2:11:40 GMT 1, Met, your art observations are impressive! You've certainly honed in on the message behind the painting, and indeed all of the paintings Ana did for this set of work called "pressing matters." Her statement about this series is linked here. anateresafernandez.com/pressing-matters/
Quite candidly, I'm not sure what piece she based the abstract on but there are some clear similarities to Girl Before a Mirror, which is something I would have never independently noticed. I'll have to ask her the next time I see her and report back.
In any event, the more art we buy over the years, I think we are bound to have some "regret" purchases in our collections as we develop our own eye and preferences. But this one I will never regret. It still brings a glow to the room in which it hangs after all of these years.
Thank you for the link.
Yes, do report back when you next speak to Fernandez.
I suspect the decision to reference Girl Before a Mirror was considered and deliberate. The subject certainly complements the artist's choice of theme for her Pressing Matters series of paintings.

Unfortunately I no longer have it In my opinion that was the worst quality Banksy print ever produced. The detail of the image was awful like it was printed using an old dot matrix printer, with pixels all over the place.

Random one this. When I was travelling round South America in 2006 I got chatting to a local guy called Juan in a town literally in the middle of nowhere in Ecuador doing some Graf. Made friends, got pissed and the next day he gave me this work that he did. When I queried how I'd carry it round he said no worries, he had a tube. He gave me a drainpipe.... Ended up carrying an industrial size drainpipe round South America for the next 6 months! To the point where I became known as Drainpipe Guy on the travelling circuit! Bought all the usual suspects since but this will always have a special place in my collection.

Thanks. My wife, who's Lithuanian but also speaks Russian, can only make out the second part. It says "Saint Petersburg." She thinks the first part in quotes is the title of the print. And the last part before the signature might be the artist's name.
We're curios now that you brought it up. So she texted it to a Russian friend. We'll see if he can do a better job of translating.

What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by Martin M on Aug 12, 2016 19:32:12 GMT 1, My first ever art buy some 25 years ago was this.....
Its by William Wylie and is staggering in its detail, i saw it in a house years before and was amazed how someone could draw such a thing, i never forgot it and a friend who must have heard me mention it saw it in a gallery in Putney, i had to buy it, was totally skint at the time but just managed to afford it. I suppose its much more relevant if you live in London. I went on to buy lots of Wylie etchings from his Thames Tidal series from the 1870's, they are also amazing in their detail. While i was at an auction at Bonhams i picked up a prints catalogue and thats when the addiction really started....my first urban art piece....this.....
Still buy the odd piece, but have slowed down a bit now as i have just about run out of wall space!. I still go to lots of shows and read a fair bit so the interest is still verges on obsession

What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by Dive Jedi on Aug 12, 2016 19:38:27 GMT 1, Probably not many people have ever heard of my first artwork. It was quite an expensive purchase in those days for me at 4.000 guilders. I had to chose between going on vacation or buying this original painting. This was in 1994 !
Test Pilot Blues - by Dutch legend Herman Brood.
Still own it today, but recently moved to the attic due to the purchase of....well..... you can probably guess.

Fantastic Piece! You'd be surprised how many people know about it. Black Francis (Pixies, Frank Black & The Catholics) wrote a song about it for his album "Bluefinger", a theme album about Herman Brood.
Damn...I forgot how much I loved that album.

What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by nik on Aug 19, 2016 22:35:24 GMT 1, Haven`t seen that Chevrier piece before. If you ever decide to take it down from the wall, pm me!
Back to topic: I remember I bought my first "art work" at a chabby and cheap pop up gallery on a holiday in Barcelona, by an unknown artist, never heard of since, under the influence of a few pina coladas, dreaming it might just be the new Picasso The "devastating" confirmation years later by my self that he for sure wasn`t the new Picasso stopped the art buy for a while, until I come across some outside Dolk works visiting my grandmother in Bergen. That brought me in to the fantastic world of street/urban art. I searched for pictures and read all I could find about Dolk and other street artists for several years before I actually went to the step and not only bought my first piece, but bought my two first pieces at the same day! It ended up with Theft from DotDotDot and A Woman of a Thousand faces by Sandra Chevrier, and the snowball has rolled ever since!

What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by El Pulpo on Nov 15, 2016 10:00:37 GMT 1, I've been traveling all over the for last 5 years and always be amazed to discover the street pieces and manage to meet local artists wherever I am. In 2013, I was in Indonesia after spending 14 month in Australia and I've send a group message to a couple of artists I really enjoyed talking with and with good talent. I bought a piece from each of them and they managed to send all in the same package.
So it was Blue art Xinja, a copie of the very very first street piece I've seen in Brisbane; Cherie Strong who got amazing drawing skills; Awen, sadly past away last year Barek, an incredibly nice guy PhilB, obsessed with Vikings who pushed me at that time to passed up stuff on streets as well.
I would like to send a pictures of those artworks but I'm still traveling and everything I buy is sent straight to my parents house back home and this package is still unopened.

What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by Dr Plip on Nov 29, 2016 23:36:59 GMT 1, I think this Cauty print from the Pax Britannica set was my first proper art purchase.
One day, a guy came into the shop where I worked and said he was a Buddhist monk and he needed to sell all of his possessions so he could go and live in a temple in Wales.
He had a huge suitcase full of comic books, art books, some prints, postcards, etc.
I bought some.
