What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by searchandrescue on Nov 30, 2016 0:15:34 GMT 1, I think this Cauty print from the Pax Britannica set was my first proper art purchase.
One day, a guy came into the shop where I worked and said he was a Buddhist monk and he needed to sell all of his possessions so he could go and live in a temple in Wales.
He had a huge suitcase full of comic books, art books, some prints, postcards, etc.
I bought some.
sweet story about the cauty, but what about the buddhist?? Can we still neg???

I always felt bad about how little I paid for his stuff.
-1 karma for me.

About 4/5 years ago I remember making the 3 hour journey from Bristol to Brighton with a pocket full of cash.To purchase my first Banksy which had no Coa but had a hand written receipt and a promise from the owner it was real.I remember driving home thinking what have I done,I've just handed over all that cash for something that may or may not be a "Banksy".But luckily it was ok and it still makes me smile everytime I look at it.

What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by cyberkid on Nov 30, 2016 10:11:17 GMT 1, around 2000. it was the "hype" about the new century and fears about a computer bug etc... I bought a limited print from a german "zero movement" artist.
Otto Piene: โ...a zone of silence and of pure possibilities for a new beginning.โ I still own many of the old "Zero" artworks.
Zero @ Guggenheim 2015 ...nothing to do with street art or Banksy. "Exit to the gift shop" changed it ! ;-)

I have always been aware of Banksy and would like one of his pieces but never cam looking for one in the first place. For me he is certainly a figure I respect but not the only, main reason I have started purchasing urban art

What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by Deleted on Jul 23, 2017 20:49:03 GMT 1, What was the very first piece of Art that you ever Bought? My my very first was this In 2003 I got it from Art Republic in Brighton, days before the rest of the edition was destroyed by the Royal Mail. I read that Art Republic sold maybe only 10 from the total edition of 450, so it was 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 150 each, and only 10 were sold. I was lucky enough to be there at the right time and got the 1st class and numbered 1/150, signed James Cauty. I was taking part in the London to Brighton Mini run, and I just managed to squeeze this in through the roll cage and into the back of the Mini to get it home I remember it well, it had about an inch to spare coz getting it in through the door was tricky with a full roll cage including door bars and angled bar across the back seat area. please post your first ever Art buy put photos and story if possible.
I've lived in Brighton since 2001. I too was lucky enough to buy the 1st, 2nd and 3rd class signed stamps, the day before Royal Mail sent their cease and desist notice to artrepublic. However, my first purchase was an Ann Carrington in 2002, funnily enough also a stamp.

What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by mrizzle on Jul 23, 2017 21:24:07 GMT 1, My first purchase was Banksy's Barcode. I bought it using my birthday money for my 21st birthday and solely bought it because I really liked the image. In fact I only became aware of the image because it was shown in a tiny feature in a copy of FHM the month before my birthday, alongside an image of Jamie Hewlett's 'Big Sponge Finger'.
A signed version was only about ยฃ50 more than the unsigned print. How much have I kicked myself over the years for not having spent the extra money!! Also, in my youthful naivety, I misplaced the POW Banksy mini books which I bought with the print. What a berk.

In truth, I've not purchased anything of similar degrees of significance since. I've the odd Blek Le Rat and Mighty Mo but it's largely about how much you enjoy an image for me rather than a name. Had my eyes opened to a number of new (and relatively) inexpensive artists recently on here who I'd hope to get some work from but I've also learnt how hard this can be when they drop.
The pics of Barcode were taken about 7 months ago in order to pursue the replacement COA which I also managed to lose in previous house moves post uni and beyond. Sometimes I am amazed at my own idiocy. I'm pleased to be able to say that a replacement COA has been approved and is pending but it did take about the full 7 months to get to this stage.

What was your first ever Art Purchase?, by seanburke on Jul 24, 2017 9:09:41 GMT 1, I always had a thing for street art and fell in love with Harringtons work after seeing his huge Brick Lane work in 2011 but was never in a position to buy a print. Roll forward to 2014 and I was sitting in bed at Christmas when I saw a local pop-up gallery was selling a framed Modern Monarchy A/P (I didn't know what an A/P was at the time!)
It was my absolute favorite CH image, a restaurant in Dublin had one hanging up and I used to pop in to look at it... Never even thought about being able to own one, So rang to find out the price and was heartbroken as I had no idea it would be so much.... 2 weeks later I got an unexpected bonus in work for almost the exact amount and didn't think twice.....
It's my absolute prize possession and marks a very special time in my life - both good and bad and I've never looked back......
