For Sale: Micallef Judgement Day & Joachim Original, by met on Aug 15, 2016 16:47:57 GMT 1, I love that Judgement day. Crazy that these were selling for close to $2000 5 years ago. I seem to recall a member of this forum paying ยฃ2,000 for a Judgement Day print around 2007.
It is a healthy, much-needed reminder and illustration of the capriciousness of the art world. Broad consensus of taste, when it does exist among a large group, is constantly shifting โ especially regarding work produced by emerging artists.
If the market of somebody as gifted as Antony Micallef can be affected to such an extent by the whims of collectors, then imagine the potential impact of such whims on the careers of artists unencumbered by talent or interesting ideas.
I'm thinking especially about the ones who churn out:
(i) interminable work in a Banksy-wannabe style; (ii) endless takes on Pop Art or tired pop culture iconography; and (iii) badly-executed images of ballerinas or whatnot, covered with faux tagging โ a cynical, Disneyfied version of graffiti โ which exemplifies the passing triumph of inauthenticity, carpetbagging and chancerdom.
All of this is a concern; it's the reason many of my posts are sadly-repetitive caveats. With some art in the above categories now being sold for four-figure sums (possibly life-changing amounts), I anticipate a fair amount of buyers' regret in the years to come.
Mistakes are a natural part of collecting, but some people do pay a heavier price for theirs.

It's what I was loosely alluding to in my previous post and you surmised it wonderfully.
Thanks for taking the time.
Rule #1 buy art first and foremost because you like it, if you do that you're unlikely to go wrong.
