Help with loss of value from damage during shipping, by smokinfish on Aug 16, 2016 1:50:28 GMT 1, Has anyone had any luck in recouping $ for a print's loss of value due to damage during shipping? I had a print delivered today that was shipped flat and bent during shipping. Leaving a soft crease noticeable across the back of print. It also has a small crease near the fold area visible from the front.
The print was purchased on Ebay and shipped via USPS with insurance. Basically the packaging has a visible fold in the cardboard in the exact same spot as the print.
I still plan on keeping the print and having it framed, but the print has obviously lost some value. I have the eBay transaction to prove what I paid for the print in mint condition, but how do I prove the loss of value amount?
Anyone have anything similar happen to them? If so how did it turn out?
I can't even tell you how bummed I am. The minute I saw the packaging I knew it wasn't good.

Help with loss of value from damage during shipping, by Howard Johnson on Aug 16, 2016 2:04:11 GMT 1, Think of it as a gift! USPS will replace the total insured value of the shipment. You'll need to file a claim and most likely you'll have to send it in. They will take a look, see the bends and the fragile stickers and hopefully issue the full insured amount and will also return the print. Proof of value is just the paypal receipt. Good luck!

Help with loss of value from damage during shipping, by Black Apple Art on Aug 16, 2016 3:10:15 GMT 1, The packaging... That might have well said "please don't touch" on it. It was packed like sh_t and most likely won't be insured by the courier since it just wasn't packed properly. Would have been a miracle if it didn't bend in transit. Make a Paypal claim for this damage as it was the seller / shipper's fault. Good news is from the pics I looks like it can be flattened by a good restoration house. Can't see the printed side but if there are no deep creases or cracks in the ink surface it should flatten out well with a good moisture treatment.

Help with loss of value from damage during shipping, by smokinfish on Aug 16, 2016 4:36:42 GMT 1, Definetly not the packaging job I was expecting for a print in the nieghborhood of $1k. It's basically double ply cardboard on both sides. The seller has offered a full refund if I want to send the print back. The seller has been very responsive. The problem is I really want to keep it, I just know it's not worth what I paid anymore...
I was going to offer to send the seller proper shipping materials. I'm kicking myself that I didn't do so...

Help with loss of value from damage during shipping, by mutatis on Aug 16, 2016 10:12:29 GMT 1, As you have indicated that the seller is responsive and you want to keep the print, why don't you get a quote from a restoration house and see whether the seller will agree to pay the charges. If it can be fully restored, there'll be no loss in value.

Couldn't agree more. As of now the seller is just offering a full refund. If the USPS rejects the packaging, we will have another discussion. My thoughts are to get USPS to pay for the restore.
Anyone have any restoration companies they have used and liked?

Help with loss of value from damage during shipping, by Howard Johnson on Aug 17, 2016 21:31:10 GMT 1, I'd really recommend attempting an insurance claim before anything else. Why by insurance if you don't use it when the package is damaged? The worst they will do is deny it due to improper packaging, and the upside is that you may essentially get the print for free (if it was properly insured for its full value).

Help with loss of value from damage during shipping, by smokinfish on Aug 18, 2016 4:06:41 GMT 1, I filed a claim, what I don't want to do is give up the print. Bend or no bend, it's a very hard print to find. As a decoration it will be fine. As an investment not so much. I'm starting to gather estimates on repair, as I would be happy with them paying for that as well. But that's not cheap either. Especially considering shipping both ways with insurance on top of repair costs.
I knew I should of sent my own packaging...

Help with loss of value from damage during shipping, by Dive Jedi on Aug 18, 2016 10:45:09 GMT 1, The sender is responsible for packaging and the shipping. So he needs to send a claim to USPS. You should be refunded by the seller. Not your job to get money from USPS. A refund of restauration costs seems very reasonable. Then seller can claim that from USPS. Not sure he will get that with packagaing like that. On the other hand - should USPS have accepted this package?
Anyway - it's my worst nightmare, since I send prints flat as well. I always bend the carton around the edges, since that makes it very difficult to fold. Your packages was very likely to be bent.....
Hope the print will be restaured into it's original glory!

For valuable pieces, always use hardboard. Someone has to try to snap it to damage the print!

This is basically how it is working for me: Either party can open the claim, but the party that opens the claim will get the $. So there's that. The buyer will also need to take the packaging and contents to the shipping company for an inspection. You are not supposed to send the damaged package back to the sender. I filed a claim online, submitted pictures and a refund amount. This week I received a letter stating that I needed to bring everything in for inspection. I have not done that yet. Stay Tuned...
Couldn't agree more on the hardboard. That is how kwatis sent my POSE BURN AP and it made it with no problems. Its a little more $ to ship but in the end its worth it. There's pictures of the packaging he did on my Burn want thread.
