Battle for title of Great Briton 2006 By Philip Johnston Last Updated: 9:04am GMT 23/11/2006
The head of the Army, a graffiti artist and a Ryder Cup golfer are among the thousands of nominations for this year's awards celebrating outstanding British achievement.
Gen Sir Richard Dannatt, the chief of the general staff, whose recent comments about the war in Iraq prompted controversy, has received substantial support for the accolade "Great Briton 2006", sponsored by Morgan Stanley with The Daily Telegraph. He is nominated in the Public Life category as too is David Walliams, the Little Britain star who swam the Channel and raised ยฃ1 million for charity.
In the Arts category, Banksy, a Bristol graffiti artist, has been nominated alongside actress Dame Helen Mirren and artist David Hockney. Among the sports achievers singled out are Darren Clarke, the Ulster golfer whose wife, Heather, died from cancer just a few weeks before he played a key part in Europe's Ryder Cup triumph, and Zara Phillips, the Queen's granddaughter, following her success in the world three-day eventing championships.
advertisementFrom the business world, Stuart Rose, who has helped transform the fortunes of Marks and Spencer, and Sir Terry Leahy, of Tesco, are nominated alongside John Bird, co-founder of The Big Issue, the newspaper sold by the homeless.
A strong field in the creative industries category includes chef Gordon Ramsay and naturalist Sir David Attenborough, described by one nominee as ''a British institution".
The science and innovation nominees include Sir Alec Jeffreys, who developed techniques for DNA fingerprinting and DNA profiling.
The nominations close tomorrow so there is still time to add to the list by visiting - www.greatbritons.org
The final judging panel includes last year's overall winner, Lord Coe, and Trevor Phillips, the chairman of the new Commission for Equality and Human Rights.
The Great Briton 2006 will be named at a gala dinner at the Guildhall in London in January.
