David Hockney ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ Painting โข Show News โข Art For , by bernard on Nov 29, 2011 12:20:35 GMT 1, I was at a Hockney exhibition many many many years back, i was lifted by his art and the simplistic way he executed the works, even the colours seemed somehow to lighten the whole place up, he was there himself but was talking to a lot of people and in any case i would have been far too shy to even say hello, i was so influenced by this event that i rushed out soon after and bought a Sausage Dog.

His draughtsmanship on the pivotal LA works, freedom of hand on pen/ink drawings, his portraits, his constant study and re-evaluation of perspective, his ever changing output, his exploration of not only photography but working with new technologies (check out his ipad sketches) all point to a great visionary and free thinker.
Anyone who gets the chance should visit the permanent exhibition(s) at Salts Mill in Saltaire, near Bradford (Hockney's home town). A terrific experience.
Not expecting everyone to agree with me, miind... and it's only an opinion.

However whiter DH should be number 1,2,3 or whatever one cannot but appreciate his contribution and should def be there.
Cannot believe Hirst not being on there he has created more tabloid stories and boll*โฌks than anyone. So really should be there as a side from his art also really represents a very British art time and movement that clashed with the music of that period etc.
So for me this really is a big error of the list. Others I kind of accept the should he/she be on it but just look at Hirsts own mega auction etc.

When he was younger he lived in the same building as my girlfriends granparents. When David moved onto brighter pastures he left hundreds of his paintings and scribbles in the building - many of them featuring my gf's mum. Grandad hated them with a vengeance (im not sure how notorious David was at the time - but it probably wouldn't have made a difference knowing how stubborn he is).. so he chucked them all in a skip and they were gone forever - unless there happened to be any art savvy opportunist trash men about at the time. Tragic
