BTW : a few people were questioning the content of this stencil, and that maybe it was a cool stencil but a bit weak and lacked the usual political bite.. including myself !

Thursday, June 22, 2006 He must be the only artist to have shown work in the world's most famous galleries - and on the side of a sexual health clinic.
'Art terrorist' Banksy has stencilled his latest work about a love triangle on the side of the clinic in his home town of Bristol.
In the past he has sneaked his artwork into galleries and last year placed a hoax exhibit on display at the British Museum.
We have to decide if it is public art or graffiti
The latest work's survival now rests on whether the local council decides if it is art or graffiti.
In the piece there is a couple, probably a husband and wife, looking out of a window, while another man hangs naked from the window ledge below.
Bristol City Council is conducting a survey to see if people want the stencil to stay. A spokeswoman said: 'We are encouraging debate among residents and would like to hear people's views and comments about this.

'We have to decide if it is public art or graffiti. If enough locals like it then it will stay.' The new Banksy stencil has attracted admiration from passers-by who have taken pictures of it with camera phones.
Art student Chris Williamson, 20, said the stencil should stay.
He said: 'It's a well done, thoughtful and playful piece and because of that it really adds to the building.
'The majority of graffiti is usually somebody spraying "Dazzer woz 'ere" but this is in a completely different category and should be allowed to stay.'
Dr Annie Evans, who works at the Brook Young People's Sexual Health Clinic, said the team there were 'bouncing with joy' about the stencil on their building.
She said: 'The latest "Banksy" is on the side of our clinic building... Did you realise how utterly appropriate your latest subject matter was, given what goes on in the building?
'Thanks a bunch and we will do our best to look after it.'

I wonder how the Council will stand if us Bristolians and others support the next decent piece of streetart that appears. Surely they can't have one rule for Banksy and one for others. I think legally they have shot themselves in the foot.
Don't get me wrong I'm all for it and voted numerous times. Hopefully one day someone will be organising tours of Bristol as they have in London.
It seem's that in a perverse way Banksy has joined the elite group to be given Freedom of our great City.

A COUNCIL was criticised for allowing a piece of graffiti by guerilla artist Banksy to stay on display.
The work shows a couple looking out of a window, while another man hangs naked from the window ledge below.
The suited husband is furiously scanning the horizon, while his wife, clad only in her underwear, stares nervously from behind his shoulder.

The work decorates the side of a Bristol City Council-owned building in Park Street in the city centre.
The stencilled painting was saved by voters in an online poll who came out 97% in favour of the image remaining.

A Bristol City Council spokeswoman said: "Nearly 500 people logged into the site during the discussion period, and of those choosing to respond, 97% supported the work.
"Common themes highlighted the fact that Banksy is a Bristolian, and that the city should be celebrating and embracing his internationally renowned work."
The artist has achieved notoriety through stunts including painting a mural on the West Bank barrier in Israel and planting a hoax painting of a caveman with a shopping trolley in the British Museum.
Liberal Democrat councillor Gary Hopkins, Executive Member for Sustainable Environment and Neighbourhoods, said: "It is fantastic that Bristol's residents have felt so strongly about it as a work of art that they have been encouraged to register their views.
'Pleased'
"I have seen it bring a smile to people's faces as they stop to appraise it, so I personally am pleased that Bristol wants it to stay. As owners of the building, the council are very unlikely to remove it now unless a tenant asks us to do so."
The council stressed the decision to keep the Banksy painting should not be seen as encouraging other graffiti artists.
Cllr Hopkins said: "The council works hard to combat ugly graffiti, tags and associated anti-social behaviour, and will prosecute those responsible.
"I stress that the decision to keep this Banksy image is not a green light for more graffiti in the city."
But the move was branded "ludicrous" by Conservative councillor Spud Murphy, who said Banksy should be prosecuted.
Cllr Murphy said: "It's absolutely stupid. They will have them all over the city now.

"They have given a licence for everybody in Bristol to do it. These graffiti artists all think they are better than each other and try to out-do each other."
He said the council spends thousands of pounds cleaning up graffiti and Banksy should be fined as an example to others.

"It's ludicrous. The council have gone mad."

This Spud Murphy was heavily into the punk scene and a complete nutter apparently.
Standard fodder for a Tory then huh?! 
Anyways, got sent this today, entitled "Husband must have come home early" ;D

oh, and people might like to know that the petition against spud murphy has been started by a ward councillor and already signed by the local MP (Stephen Williams - Liberal Democrat spokesman for Higher and Further Education). The 'Cabot' ward covers most of the city centre, including the street art in question....
Whereas Spud represents Avonmouth, a concrete dock land well outside of Bristol that could do with a bit of street art to brighten it up....

The controversial painting by Banksy on the side of a building in Park Street looks set to stay, despite calls to have it removed.Last month it emerged the building was Grade II listed which sparked calls for the picture of a man fleeing his lover's bedroom, to be scrubbed off.
But Bristol City Council has told the Post that the work of art will stay.
Tory city councillor Spud Murphy had said the council was wrong not to remove the picture, which is on the wall of a sexual health clinic.
He said: "It is on a listed building and the council have condemned it by leaving it there. It's one rule for them and one for us.
"I think it should be painted over. Banksy should not be allowed to do it. Is the council going to let the next person off who does it? It is not art."
But Lib Dem Councillor Mark Wright said the image had artistic qualities. He has launched a petition to save it and Bristol West Lib Dem MP Stephen Williams has signed up.
Mr Wright (Lib Dem, Cabot) said: "The vast majority of people can see the difference between street art and mere vandalism.
"For as long as residents continue to support the Banksy artwork, it should stay. Why should the council remove something, at significant expense, that most people enjoy and want to stay? What a waste of money that would be."
In a recent poll, 97 per cent of nearly 500 people said the image should be saved.
MP Stephen Williams (Lib Dem) said: "I am a great admirer of Bansky's art and have seen examples both in Bristol and London.

back on topic; as I understand it, whether the painting stays or goes has got feck all to do with anyone other than English Heritage - local councillors can piss & moan till the cows come home* but the buck stops with them & if studies show flat spray paint does negligible damage over X years they can take their sweet time over making a decision one way or the other.
On a side note; I appreciate it's a great spot & all that, but do grade 2 listed buildings really need 'adorning'? [if I was going to be an idiot I'd say, 'what's next? churches? etc, but I'm not going to because while I am clearly an idiot, Mr R Banks & Co aren't ]]
Maybe that's the point, 'If this gets to stay I can go paint Buck House & that'll be cool too...'
