Banksy's swindle, by corblimeylimey on May 27, 2007 19:10:57 GMT 1, Cheers becksaboo
"I donโt read chat rooms or go on MySpace"
Your art is still free on the streets but costly in the galleries. What dictates that?
B: What I find is I donโt have much say in what things cost. Every time I sell things at a discount rate, most people put them on eBay and make more money than I charged them in the first place. The novelty with that soon wears off.

Banksy's swindle, by leumasdarnley on May 28, 2007 13:54:42 GMT 1, From reading this it seems like Banksy is caught in a little bit of a win lose situation. Although he is famous for his work he cannot really enjoy the fame personally because of his anaminity. He could be playing it up for the interview but I definalty got that vibe. Intersting almost ironic now that at the seeming peak of his career (ok i admit he could do this for decades longer and get even more famous everyday) banksy kind of feels betrayed by the art community. I guess not so much his fans persay but the fact that he has lost control of his work, almost has a life of its own once he sells it. We look at the hundreds of thousands of pounds some of his stuff goes for and perhaps assume he is selling it or that he is getting that money but not so. Really interesting reading cheers becksaboo.

He may not be getting the money from alot of the older stuff that was sold for hundreds years ago, but take the ballarina statue he did recently, I bet he got a good cut from that.
There is also nothing stopping him from producing more original work now and selling it for ยฃ100k. i guess thats where the dilema comes in for him, does he want to produce work and sell it at ยฃ100k or does he want to get back to his roots and spray the street!

Banksy's swindle, by corblimeylimey on May 28, 2007 15:45:56 GMT 1, I get the feeling that fame is something he's never desired, I also think he's really against all this buy to sell for profit and hates the attitude of a good number of people buying his work for investment, profit, greed etc if he were dead he'd be turning in his grave ;D

Banksy's swindle, by carlito on May 28, 2007 18:16:00 GMT 1, "The art world is the biggest joke going. Itโs a rest home for the overprivileged, the pretentious, and the weak. And modern art is a disgrace โ never have so many people used so much stuff and taken so long to say so little. Still, the plus side is itโs probably the easiest business in the world to walk into with no talent and make a few bucks"
thank f*ck for Banksy

Banksy's swindle, by johnerotten on May 28, 2007 18:41:37 GMT 1, ummm...how much did he sell his statue of David to Branjelina Jolie? or the canvasses from the LA show?
banksy isn't broke.
puhleaze... let's not feel sorry for banksy the artist. i feel sorry for my BANKsy account and my new addiction.
even if he got half of the sales of morons he got half a mil. not bad for one day's sales. you sell three or four prints per year like that and your making a few mils per year.
maybe i'm in better company on this forumn than i had thought but my net worth is in the negative....dunno about the rest of you.

Banksy's swindle, by leumasdarnley on May 28, 2007 22:00:25 GMT 1, Well fame can be a lonley place esp for someone who cannot come out of the shadows. Many artists never see the fame Banksy has while they are alive. It must certainly bring up moral and personal conflict, but hey like some say for a couple million its just got to be part of the business. Interesting though

Banksy's swindle, by BK83 on May 28, 2007 22:33:25 GMT 1, This is exactly where Banksy wanted to be with his art.... I don't think we need to feel sorry for him. if he really wanted to be just an artist that was out painting the streets -- why sign your name on anything? by signing his name he was inadvertently asking for some sort of recognition for his art -- he (and Laz) knew exactly what they were doing. Banksy is a marketing genius -- he's also a phenomenal artist.

That gives me a great idea for a bumper sticker
"Save Ebay kill Banksy"
too drastic?
