Damien Hirst, by sonmi451 on Sept 19, 2016 17:42:35 GMT 1, I realize I could scour the webz and this board's history to provide insight, but I was wondering if someone could explain to a new collector his appeal/historical impact? is his art polarizing? This isn't meant to sound like a loaded question, but I have certainly noticed how much his prints sell for given what I perceive to be relatively "minimalist" images.

Damien Hirst, by South Bound on Sept 19, 2016 17:59:28 GMT 1, Wow, to address the OP would take a pretty long time.
I will say that Hirst's prints (full disclosure, I own one) are of the highest quality and (the ones I have seen) look amazing in person.

Damien Hirst, by sin on Sept 19, 2016 18:02:58 GMT 1, For the record, I dont buy Hirst because its not my thing. However, I have a gallery I deal with from time to time who does deal in Hirst and Ive had some great conversations with them.
First, its not about process. The pills, the spot paintings, etc, its all concept. The pills are a critique or conversation about how commercialized mood controlling substances have impacted our lives, and taken over as a form of sustenance. The spot paintings, from what I was told, are color pattern meant to illicit an emotional response in line with the title. Its the thought, the concept, more than the execution. There is no rendering, color field, etc. I personally have no connection with the work, I get it, I just dont have an emotional or cerebral response to it. Other than to think "maybe i should become an artist" The gallery i deal with loves that shit. To each their own.

Damien Hirst, by Coach on Sept 19, 2016 20:09:24 GMT 1, I'm not particularly attracted to spin paintings. But the remainder of Hirst's prints I find aesthetically very pleasing. His original works are outstanding. Their scale and audacity are wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed his major show at the Tate a few years ago. I also happened to find that kids really connected with the work. Make of that what you will.

Damien Hirst, by Schrödinger's Chat on Sept 19, 2016 20:43:07 GMT 1, I pop over to his Gallery, Newport gallery in vauxhall as it is only 10 minutes from my work.
It is an awesome space and really beautifully done out, the current mini Jeff Koons retrospective is great and the Pharmacy 2 cafe is fantastic. Great details, chairs shaped as pills, everyone wearing chemist jackets, the ceiling is like a spot print and there are butterfly wing pieces up on the walls.
In the shop you can see Hirst prints, they are seriously expensive and not massively too my taste but nevertheless great to see in the flesh. A nice Harland Miller there at the moment too.

I'm a big fan - great building, great shows (so far) and great food in Pharmacy 2. Looking forward to my next visit.

Damien Hirst, by Deleted on Sept 19, 2016 21:11:59 GMT 1, Big fan of the Spot prints myself. I do own one and I enjoy seeing them in the variety of ways in which they have been produced. I am partial to the woodcut with deckled edges. I am personally attracted the the uniformity of shape, size, and spacing of the multi spot prints but I also enjoy the complete randomness of the colors. Even the concept of Hirsts involvement being nothing more than the final approval. I think the the torn edges and the tiny wood grain impressions / imperfections left in the ink from the wood press balance the in your face overall uniformity nicely.
I also agree with Coach in when kids see it their eyes light up. Who knows if it's the symmetry or colors or just not living long enough to have been told what to like and what not to but it's the only piece on my walls that gets this type of reaction from a young age group and it's fun to see.

Only has the first few minutes here but I have the entire file link if anyone would like to see it. Juts PM me.

Damien Hirst, by Wearology on Sept 19, 2016 21:42:18 GMT 1, There is a very informative WSJ article that summarizes the rise & fall and predicted rise again of the Damien Hirst market from 2008 - present. It states that his prices at auction are off about 84% from their height in 2008. It seems that those in the supposed know are being encouraged to buy his art now as they are predicting that the insttitutional money behind his art will not let it go down in flames as it has been doing the past 10 years.

He was a member of the YBA's in the 80's/90's that included Tracey Emin, dino's bros, marc quinn...later had the likes of saatchi backing and winning the Turner prize doesnt seem to harm one's career either.
I must do something with that building rubble and old tyres in the back yard.
