Kaws • Isolation Tower, Snoopy Print, by CREAM on Oct 7, 2016 1:21:01 GMT 1, I do find it interesting he has stepped up his print game production but has completely abandoned his vinyl toy market. Would love to see something new on that front.

Kaws • Isolation Tower, Snoopy Print, by CREAM on Oct 7, 2016 1:32:18 GMT 1, Why not both!? Money is money and he seems to like it. Its not like he is making them himself in his basement. He could charge 1k a pop easy and they would sell quick. Must be a major headache dealing with the makers or else I cant figure out why he stopped. He is still making the plush ones.

The lack of vinyl releases are driving up prices. The backside fell out the Chum prices when someone found a few extra whites, yellows and clears lying around in a warehouse. Fair enough prices on Chums have risen again, but when a white chum went from selling for $2000 to $200, it was a bad day.
It was nice to be able to walk into a shop, look at the new Kaws release and decide whether it was worth $100-200 price tag. Many of them weren't, but hype and lack of releases has pushed the market.

Yeah one per person, unless you have multiple phones, addresses, names etc.
I assume once the first 50 people spam them, their email account will make a little kerrching noise.

Kaws • Isolation Tower, Snoopy Print, by Hairbland on Oct 7, 2016 13:50:25 GMT 1, Is he really flooding the market though? His popularity has soared the past 3-4 years and I think he is mainly just trying to keep up with demand. If you look at just his single releases and set of three snoopies that's pretty much on par with any major artist of his stature, if not below average. Obviously his 10 print sets put a lot more supply in the market but those are a completely different animal in comparison to his single releases. Those are for a very specific collector and rarely come up for sale. Has his production gone up... yes but clearly by all the sell outs even with tiered pricing the demand is still there. Demand is obviously high considering he's become one of the most popular living artists over the past few years. That being said, my point was more toward the longevity of that demand and restrained growth of his market. Obviously, Kaws profits from these editions in the short term, but I'd argue they arguably threaten the sustainability of his market, specifically the market for his multiples. Looking at the numbers, the increase is striking: He has released 3000 prints in 2015-2016 (not including this edition), and he released approximately 2500 prints from 1997-2014. I.e. he more the doubled the supply of prints in a two year period. Up until this point, the prices for his multiples has grown at a steady but noteworthy pace, and I think a major factor in that is the relative scarcity of his work. However, in the past few years his work is popping up all over the place, sometimes with little to no markup (i.e. the snoopy set listed on eBay for cost). His prints are no longer exclusive, as anyone with 5k can get on the Pace mailing list and grab themselves a kaws. the question is why? He clearly doesn't need the money, and he has exercised great restraint by limiting his prints throughout his entire career. Its not like these are for the "fans" as the majority of his collectors were priced out as soon as he started working exclusively with Pace. IMO the recent surge in his print output will hurt his overall print market, whether its by the end of the year or in the next 5, there simply has to be a tipping point. I think somewhere in your timeline between early print work (which was inexpensive initially, but shot up rapidly on secondary) and print work 2015-2016 was a major leap forward with high profile multiple gallery representation and a number of high profile gallery and museum shows. The demand is obviously there, the art market (collectors/investors) has decided he is the real deal. Instead of wondering about his prints I wonder which of the mainstream NYC museums will be the first to do a show. People of all ages and colors love his work.

Sure he did the one sculpture where it was him as walt disney with companion instead of mickey but that was just a pop icon play. There is NO crass commercialism with this guy. He is more PRO $ than any artist around. Why make something others can fake and ruin when you can make prints and charge 15-20k while, making absurd rules...

I've been a fan of his for years, have met and chatted with him a few times...and of course there are the books.
He began by subverting advertisements on public property. The original Companion is acknowledged as his take on Mickey Mouse, which is why it is in that sculpture you refer to from years later, a bookend of sorts (as toys were phased out) or maybe to be more literal to those who didn't get the joke 10 years earlier.
From the man himself, "I found it weird how infused a cartoon could become in people's lives, the impact it could have, compared to regular politics."
From Widewalls Gallery artist bio: "In 1999, KAWS made his first toy with Japanese company Bounty Hunter, a vinyl figure of Mickey Mouse with x-‘ed out eyes (as if Mickey just drank from a bottle marked POISON – this image was even incorporated into a balloon for the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade)."
That KAWS has been able to take his original idea of subversion all the way to the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is as big as anything Banksy has done - these guys are two of the pillars of Street/Urban Art.
And it appears while poking around I've discovered that he already has work in NYC's Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection.

Especially since you can separate the set of 3 if you please.
