Banksy takes to streets to highlight Aids crisis

The "guerrilla" graffiti artist Banksy has spray-painted a striking, large-scale image entitled Sweeping It Under The Carpet on a wall in Chalk Farm, north London.
Commissioned by The Independent, the workcan be seen as a metaphor for the West's reluctance to tackle issues such as Aids in Africa.
Banksysaid yesterday that the commissioned piece was also about the democratisation of subjects in works of art.
"In the bad old days, it was only popes and princes who had the money to pay for their portraits to be painted," he said.
"This is a portrait of a maid called Leanne who cleaned my room in a Los Angeles motel. She was quite a feisty lady."
Banksy's work is now showing as part of an exhibition about the Palestinian conflict called Occupied Space, this week at Gallery 27, Cork Street, London. His creations will feature alongside around 55 other artists, including Jake and Dinos Chapman, Antony Gormley and Maggi Hambling.

Charities praise RED edition of 'Independent'

The RED edition of The Independent has won praise from charities for highlighting the issues facing some of the world's poorest countries.
Within hours of going on sale yesterday, copies of the newspaper, guest edited by Bono of the rock band U2, had become collectors' items. One edition was bought for ยฃ9.90 on eBay and newsagents reported that copies had sold out.
Charities welcomed the fact that half of the revenues from the newspaper were going to help fight HIV and Aids among women and children in Africa.
But they also praised Bono's decision to raise awareness of the epidemic that is blighting a continent and successive generations of its people.
Deborah Jack, the chief executive of the National Aids Trust, said: "For us, it was a really important edition because it tackled the issue in a new and fresh way. "Deaths from Aids do not make the papers because people have got to used to them happening, and yet this is the most serious infection facing not just Africa but also countries like the UK, where rates of HIV are continuing to rise."
She added: "We need to keep the pressure on politicians to fulfil their high-level commitments and look at new ways of tackling the epidemic.
"In some countries there are so many people infected and so many people dying and yet they are still not using condoms. Things like vaccines and microbicides are on the horizon and we need to invest in those," she said.
"Putting the issue on the front page of The Independent will also help to tackle the stigma and discrimination that faces people who have HIV/Aids."
Richard Miller, the UK director of the development charity ActionAid, said: "Congratulations to The Independent for putting HIV in Africa on the front page and focusing an edition on aid, debt and trade.
"We did fear that the media - whose headlines last year helped spur politicians to make key pledges - would soon forget those issues or feel that they had been 'done'.''

Set of 16 with 15 of each phot. All 6 are 1/15 and have been sold (ยฃ2500 each.) They're embossed with the 'Heavy Weaponry' tag and signed/numbered.

This is mad. I do like quite a few of Banksy's ideas / work but ยฃ2500 for some digi photos is ludicrous.
I sell my hand printed ones for ยฃ6 each. I know which photographer I'd prefer to be

and will I have to wear a purple wig or hold a freaking umbrella in the air!? <[:-<
too busy to think too much at the moment, but will definately make a date soon-ish, for a sunday lunch timish, meet maybe around old street area (not shoreditch tube! too busy on sunday). Hackney / Hoxton / Shoreditch should be do-able in an afternoon.... walking.....
Will do it more than once hopefully / different areas on different days so if anyone can't make it there might be another opportunity.

The image on the left shows the white cube version in Hoxton and the image on the right shows the Chalk Farm version with the painted(?) additions....

Where did all the extra detail in the face and hands come from? the first photos of this piece on Flickr didn't have the detail but now someone has added lipstick, shading etc. to the face. For me this one is defo better on the Hoxton wall.
