Seller's who won't ship overseas..., by soam24 on Oct 11, 2016 14:57:49 GMT 1, with the proper packing, insurance and tracking you're covered..
I don't understand when a seller (UK) says they won't ship to the USA for "obvious reasons"... WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!
I've shipped to the UK so many times, and received and have had no issues, not to mention if the buyer is going to pay full shipping costs....
//end rant

Seller's who won't ship overseas..., by nah on Oct 11, 2016 17:32:50 GMT 1,
therein lies the problem -- artworks/antiques damaged in transit are excluded from compensation by every non-specialist international courier I've come across, and going the specialist route isn't always viable if the work is of a relatively low value. would be happy to hear from anyone that has cracked this one.

I've had no issues sending fully insured and filing claims when I had too via USPS from USA > UK
I'd be curious as to a courier that insures, as this is all new information to me. It's crazy to think b/c I've purchased quite valuable work in the past from the UK and this is the first it's came to my attention.

Seller's who won't ship overseas..., by Nick on Oct 11, 2016 18:41:55 GMT 1, DHL is the only company I have come accross that insure art, and that is only to a max value of £5k. I've searched the terms and conditions of all the other big players and all of them exclude art so wouldn't pay out on any claims.

Seller's who won't ship overseas..., by Deleted on Oct 11, 2016 18:43:26 GMT 1, I loathe sending overseas, as it normally seems to end up in a message that the parcel hasn't arrived. After much searching for the tracking number, it's invariably in customs or a sorting office in nowhereville. I'm actually not keen on even posting in the UK, and I'm happy just to shrink my market to the 8 or 9 million people that also live in London.

Seller's who won't ship overseas..., by Deleted on Oct 11, 2016 18:46:06 GMT 1, The thing with packaging is that you need to know how to pack stuff bomb-proof. I have only sold 1 item in my life until now and that was in a tube. I for one wouldnt know how to safely pack something framed (of course I could find out) and thus I'd be really hesitant to do so. Also when you live in the UK you will have the option to just sell it within the UK most of the time. I'd also take that route first and only when something didn't sell for weeks I'd consider sending it abroad.
But mate, imagine living in the Netherlands. Even people from the UK are hesitant to ship framed stuff here so that's even harder

I've searched the terms and conditions of all the other big players and all of them exclude art so wouldn't pay out on any claims. Didn't know that. Does this include Royal Mail's basic insurance for their signed for services? I think the potential payout is capped at £500 and I always assumed it included prints. The post office clerks often ask what's inside and never mention art isn't covered.

Seller's who won't ship overseas..., by Schrödinger's Chat on Oct 11, 2016 18:59:29 GMT 1, I have posted pieces to loads of different countries but I still massively prefer to post locally, I think for me it's because I can't fully relax until the piece has arrived so UK delivery is my preference.
I quite like a popular auction sites Global Shipping Programme as it seems that they take the risk once it is in their hands. Example, I sold a piece to Japan, the piece was held in customs and deemed inappropriate material, the buyer got a refund, I kept the sale money, so I assume ebay took the hit.

The post office clerks often ask what's inside and never mention art isn't covered. From memory Royal Mail Uk delivery is covered. Get's tricky when you use parcelforce though as they have different terms and have a specific term that states damaged or lost items get paid out at the lesser figure of either what the sender originally paid for the item, or what the purchaser has just paid. And you need to prove what you did pay or they void the claim. So if you're sending a valuable print that you picked up cheap back in the day then you're buggered if it goes south. Ridiculous rule!
Also when you use the global parcelforce they full on won't cover any art at all.

Seller's who won't ship overseas..., by 11 on Oct 11, 2016 19:36:37 GMT 1, I'm surprised DHL even cover art insurance - all couriers that I've seen have exclusions in their T's & C's stating they only cover art loss up to a set value, damage of any sort isn't covered.....
Flight Logistics (and probably 1 or 2 others) offer a specific Pack and Send service where they collect the piece, unpack it, inspect it, confirm any and all discrepancies, re-pack it and will then provide full insurance. This is at a significant cost above any standard Courier fees.
I've posted reasonably priced items overseas before but if it is something of a bit more value or unique then I personally don't like to post them, that said....I am happy to let a buyer arrange their own courier and decide on the level of service they want as it is then at their own risk.

Seller's who won't ship overseas..., by Schrödinger's Chat on Oct 11, 2016 19:56:08 GMT 1, Interesting stuff Schrödinger's Chat I've wondered how their Global Shipping Programme works. I think if an item you want to buy is covered then you won't receive any import tax. I haven't actually bought through the GSP, but when you sell the buyer pays your postage charge + a postage charge agreed with eBay. I guess that this applies to taxes as well, tax and additional postage is between you and eBay but I don't know for sure.
The interesting thing with the print I posted was that eBay would have seen/had access to photos of the image being sent from when I posted the auction, I guess it was there responsibility to check whether it was legal or not.

Seller's who won't ship overseas..., by Happy Go Lucky Chap on Oct 12, 2016 22:37:32 GMT 1, For convenience (they pick up) I use UPS, and whilst I wrap flat pieces in acid-free tissue paper and plywood and a ton of bubble wrap, it's always "fingers-crossed" until it lands in one piece with an overseas buyer. I like to think of the postal workers as demented beasts throwing my parcel around like a frisbee or pogoing up and down on it in the mosh pit that is their sorting office.
Having bought and sold many times, I have only ever had one piece damaged in transit, and then couldn't be bothered wasting my time filing a claim, as most likely they would have had a get out clause.
