Kaws @ the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, by Happy Shopper on Oct 21, 2016 14:18:59 GMT 1, Can't understand why they did an 'open' edition in the first place devalues the brand and is open to abuse by fakers and bootleggers this is all going to end up in ๐ญ I assume it's to stop the fakers and bootleggers. No point in buying a dodgy looking fake on ebay if you know you can get a genuine one anytime from kawsone or medicom.

Kaws @ the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, by smokinfish on Oct 21, 2016 14:19:03 GMT 1, People stood in line for the iPhone 7. Then they announced it sold out. Then they made more. Then they sold out again. They make more, They sell out. A month from now they will be available in every store without a waiting period or a line. They might even go on sale.
That's how open edition works. These KAWS figures are no different then the Star Wars figures at your local Toys R Us. The more you buy the more they'll make.
Why do an open edition? Why not? Star Wars figures from the 70s were open editions they are still worth more money now then before.
It will be years instead of days for the $ increase. Sorry flippers,

Kaws @ the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, by natstan on Oct 21, 2016 14:19:53 GMT 1, Still don't believe these sold out, that's as**tty definition of open edition if you ask me. very vague.ย some people were speculating it meant "not numbered".ย kaws said "some items" will be restocked .... no idea if that meant more companions or what.ย hope they just make another batch so all these hoarders that bought 3 sets are stuck with them.
I guess by using the term 'open edition', it gives him the freedom to do another run in whatever quantity as he sees fit. The only question is when, where and how many he is going to do it.
You can call that a smart business move. And perhaps the reason he launched this in conjunction with the show is because it's somewhat a retrospective of his career.
I hope those greedy chaps who bought 3 sets all get burned seriously.

The economies of scale of the iphone, star wars and a kaw's toy are far from equal.
Every edition is open until it closes (although its not an accurate measure because these things are established by bots, a new iphone 2 on amazon costs 1,200. God know how much and where you can find one in a brick and mortar for eg) every edition is open until it closes.
There is no certainty how many of these TOYS will be made. But as you, I suspect there will be more chances to buy these

Kaws @ the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, by dreadnatty on Oct 21, 2016 14:55:41 GMT 1, If he really wanted to do an open edition, they shouldve just taken pre-orders for a period of time, determined how many toys needed to be made and sent the order to the manufacturer to fill the order. Its very simple and prob wouldve gotten a better production cost as he wouldve been able to sell a lot more than he did with this 'method'. Its not that difficult.

I'm not sure you completely understand how an open edition works. They might make more, they might not, we'll see. It's definitely not an absolute. They're not making anymore of that Faile open edition that got released last year and sold out in a couple of days. I personally think the only restock will be of the black BFF plush toys in the modern giftshop. I think this sale was mostly to reward the modern for hosting a huge Kaws retrospective for 3 months. He's hooking them up and I'm sure making a pretty penny himself.

Kaws @ the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, by bone on Oct 21, 2016 15:46:36 GMT 1, Hopefully he ends up selling more so that anyone that wants one can get one. I thought I bought 2, but turns out the CC was canceled like everyone else. I did get the first email from the museum, but not the second one actually make a purchase. I would have tried a bit harder to get one had a know that it was a limited open edition (if that is the case). It doesn't sound like anyone knows for certain what will happen with this edition.

Kaws @ the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, by Unica on Oct 21, 2016 15:51:25 GMT 1, Its a shame they allowed buyers to purchase 3 of each model, i'm sure people bought a maximum of 18 and thats what we are seeing on eBay, buyers would be less likely to flip if they only had one set, they bought 3 sets so 18 total, maybe sell the other 12 and you have more than paid for your set. May as well play the system if they let you. I would of bought the three dissected to go with my 2006 15in set but looks unlikely unless they release more. So fingers crossed that either KAWS, the Modern or Medicom make a statement that this will be truly be an open edition and they will keep making them for the forseeable future. That would put an end to much of the flipping and the bootlegs. I'm not holding my breath for another release or I expect they may have said it already to quell the rush, but the way its played out so far the flippers are winning. There are already quite a number on eBay being sold way above the purchase price. Anybody heard anything about more being produced?

order numbers up until 10800ish received the followup email to fulfill their CC declined orders. haven't really heard of anything past that but this is just a general guess based on some people's info they posted.

They eventually stopped making the past iphone models.
And they will stop making these Kaws figures as well. Usually when galleries/shops/websites stop ordering them. But they aren't going to stop making them or shipping them (if they are already made) right after they released and sold out in a few days. The parking lot camping, long lines, multiple hour waits and selling out in a day are all marketing tactics that build interest and create free PR. It's a social media frenzy.
By creating an open edition and making it accessible to everyone, he is broadening his fan base. Believe it or not, there are people who will spend $200 on artwork because they like it. Not because it will be worth more in the future. I think its great that Kaws is doing an open edition for his fans. I hope everyone gets one!
The fact is nobody knows when they will stop production. But who am I to stop the hype train for all the flipper's out there trying to convince everyone that they won't get one.
In regards to Faile I personally wouldn't put him and Kaws in the same camp.

They're not making anymore of that Faile open edition that got released last year and sold out in a couple of days. I personally think the only restock will be of the black BFF plush toys in the modern giftshop. I think this sale was mostly to reward the modern for hosting a huge Kaws retrospective for 3 months. He's hooking them up and I'm sure making a pretty penny himself. the black BFF plushes may be restocked from the remaining stock they have but they will definitely not be produced again. all the BFF plushes, both the black and the blue version are limited edition and are each individually numbered.
People stood in line for the iPhone 7. Sorry flippers, I think you are very mistaken. I'm not sure you completely understand how an open edition works. They might make more, they might not, we'll see. It's definitely not an absolute. Kaws @ the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, by wenjamin on Oct 21, 2016 19:56:03 GMT 1, medicom produced d*face's d*dog figures for a good long while... maybe not in the same league in terms of demand but the initial batch did sell out fairly quickly and they subsequently restocked them shortly after... either way, i hope there will be enough for everyone who wants them.

Yes, I thought I was smart when I checked out last night, but apparently not so much...

Kaws @ the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, by freezy on Oct 21, 2016 20:33:18 GMT 1, I got an email acknowledging that I tried to purchase yesterday. But nothing since. It says that they will email if there is nothing available to purchase. Perhaps there is some hope. I really though that open edition means that they can sell as many as are ordered, at least for a full 24 hour period.
