Banksy = sell out?, by sarahann on Jan 19, 2008 17:24:01 GMT 1, Dear All,
I'm doing research for a project I am doing at university. I study sociology and for one of our courses we have to do a project on whatever we like - as long as it is sociological of course!
What I want to write about it whether Banksy and other such artists are "sell-outs"? Also the irony of capitalism making these people famous, when really, they are usually trying to fight it.
Do you think Banksy is a sell-out? What do you think of the idea that celebrities, like Angelina Jolie, buying Banksy's work? www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=406161&in_page_id=1773
If you have any other thoughts or ideas for the project do let me know! Thanks a lot!

Banksy = sell out?, by headphonesex on Jan 19, 2008 17:35:20 GMT 1, I think there's a distinction between 'selling out' and 'selling'. I don't think you can be accused of selling out unless you change your work to cave in to commercial pressures, or prostitute yourself for the advertising dollar. And he's never done that.

Banksy = sell out?, by crazyarsemother on Jan 20, 2008 10:49:48 GMT 1, I think its a bit naive to suggest that Banksy is anti-capitalist. He just 'tries' to present a mirror to aspects of society. He would not sell prints or paintings if he was anti-capitalist. He is against large coporations, but I am against battery chicken famring - but I still buy free range eggs. There are other artists who are solely focused on anti-capitialism. Artists whos work attempts to disrupt capitalism. Such as buying loads of stuff and the taking it back, eating money coins and then 'sh*tting' them out, sterlising them and then putting them back into circulation in an attempt 'dirty' the money in people's minds. I can't remember what the movement is but you would be able to find it easy enough. I went to lecture about it in Nottingham and it was a Trent University lecturer that ran it.

Banksy = sell out?, by sarahann on Jan 20, 2008 18:20:53 GMT 1, If Banksy's ideology is not anti-capitalist, then what do you suggest all his work arts are about? All his work of arts somehow criticise our society surely? And our society is capitalist.
However, the question here is not whether he is or not "anti-capitalist" but what you think of celebrities buying his work art for such huge amount of money. The same idea applies to Ché Guevara. His face is seen very often on t-shirts, etc... but do people actually know what he did and who he is?
These two characters don't have a say in the matter - Ché Guevara is dead and his face is not copyrighted so anyone can use it. And Banksy puts his art work on private property hence it's not his either.
Is it ironic that a lot of capital it put into these "revolutionaries" or should there be some sort of "unwritten law" to respect their ideologies and leave their work as it is?

Banksy = sell out?, by guest2 on Jan 20, 2008 18:32:06 GMT 1, No one can call this guy a sell out.
f**ki' Revs (and cost)
this dude is crazy, I want to see the rest now!
As for banksy, I not concerned how much money he's made, I have a feeling that man is going to
put so much back in his lifetime.

Banksy = sell out?, by sarahann on Jan 21, 2008 19:44:20 GMT 1, The question is not how much money he makes. The debate is whether it is ironic that Banksy's work - which is arguably anti-capitalist - only is famous because of our capitalistic minds. There is a lot of money grossing from Banksy's art work - books, documentaries, etc... Whether he gets the money or not is not the issue. He is more than welcome to the money as he "makes" the artwork. Banksy is obviously not a capitalist because if he was he'd make sure no one but him gets the money for his work.
The debate is whether you think Banksy's work is only famous because of capitalism. We are obsessed by celebrities, ie: Paris Hilton and others, and Banksy is obvioulsy against it (or why else would he graffiti on her CDs?) - yet we treat him exactly like Paris Hilton. We are obsessed to know what he does next, where he does etc ... As long as the Banksy name is there we are happy. The same way we treat Coca-Cola and other co-operations like that.
Hence WE make Banksy a sell-out - Banksy is not a sell out himself. That's the debate.

Banksy = sell out?, by crazyarsemother on Jan 23, 2008 1:39:27 GMT 1, Sorry Sarah whats the debate again?
He sells his work. He's a capitalist.
He makes anti-capital statements but so did John Lenon when he was not buying fur coats. I don't think this means he has sold out. He just wants to make a living from his art same as Monet did.
Im sure I have heard him deny being anti-capitalist in an interviews or one his books. And so what if a film star buys some of his work, loads of other people do too. Like maybe me or you.
Does coming on here mean your obsessed with a celebrity?
Shame on you.

Banksy = sell out?, by Silentbill on Oct 6, 2009 14:21:47 GMT 1, I wouldnt consider Banksy a sell out for profitting from his skill, how many anti-capitalist anarchists out there work as skilled labourers? (Carpenters, painters etc). The fact that celebrities are buying his work probably not only gives him a buzz but also allows him to use the money on other projects which he wont see any profits from.
