Album of the year..., by Sliding on the Walls on Nov 16, 2016 21:09:59 GMT 1, I've listened to quite a few albums this year so far, but the one I keep going back to more than the rest is 22, A Million by Bon Iver. A detour from the folky path Justin Vernon had carved himself in his previous two albums, with more attention paid to samples and looping using the Opi1 and his Medina voice autotuning device. It sounds incredibly personal (like every Bon Iver album). It's very short at little over 30 minutes, but I haven't tired of listening to it and I seem to find new parts I hadn't noticed before on each listen. With everyone having recording devices so readily available these days, it's not hard to find live versions of tracks from this album on YouTube. Bon Iver have been known to change their tracks especially for their live performances so the album itself is seen as just the beginning, then you can watch and listen to it evolve through future live renditions. It's my album of the year so far, but there have been other contenders too.
Third place is the haunting melodical ambience that is Steve Hauschildt's 'Strands'. Beautiful arpeggiated synths cross between Nils Frahm, Future Sound of London and Jean-Michel Jarre in this instrumental album. It slowly brings you in, and keeps you held right the way through its journey.
Second place is S U R V I V E - RR349. - Imagine being transported into a music sequence from a 1980s high school horror movie. The throbbin arpegiated synths and reverberated drums are so nostalgic throughout this album, i've been listening to it in my car and feeling like I belong in a scene from the movie Drive!

Album of the year..., by NN on Nov 18, 2016 14:36:13 GMT 1, Albums that were released this year:
Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker
I have been listening to the album since its release. Amazing piece of art. The best piece of music that was released this year imho. Just very sad that he had to die so shortly afterwards.
Albums that might be released this year and for sure will make it in my top 3: The new Gorillaz album.
Albums that were released not this year but I listened to excessively: Talking Heads - Remain in Light Sia - 1000 Forms of Fear

Album of the year..., by Sliding on the Walls on Nov 21, 2016 11:36:21 GMT 1, Blackstar by Bowie We got it from here...thank you 4 your service by A Tribe Called Quest Blonde by Frank Ocean (only because it introduced me to Channel Orange) I enjoyed Blonde, it grew on me. After about 5-6 listens I was really into it. I think the production is great - I saw he got Jamie XX, Hudson Mohawke, Pharell among others involved in producing it. I found it to be honest. Perhaps a little too honest at times - maybe it's just my perception but some of his lyrics felt a bit like he's getting them in so he can relish in the sympathy he gets once it's released. Like he's fishing for it? He also took some hooks directly from other songs (Carpenters) and some indirectly (Seigfried guitar sounding just like Radiohead's Reckoner, Adele's Someone Like You chords in Future Free) although he does give a thank you to Radiohead in the shoutouts and Adele has been quoted saying how much she loves the album.
I also got slightly put off by the same loop in every single interim segue track. As pleasant as it sounds, i felt that could have been used just once and he could have used variations of it or something else entirely for each additional one to keep it fresh. Also at the very end when he's talking to people into a field voice recorder - the volume of that whole segment is way louder than the rest of the album and it's jarring!
It's ultimately a smooth listen with some quality tracks on it. My favourite being White Ferrari.
If you listened to this and it got you into Channel Orange then that's not a bad thing at all! That album is fantastic.

There's a nice website called "whosampled". In case you're interested in the samples artist have used. Often I'm sure I'm recognizing sampled parts, it's fun to see if my guess is right.

Album of the year..., by Sliding on the Walls on Nov 22, 2016 13:45:56 GMT 1, I saw Trentemรธller in 2007 at the Glade Festival and I was awestruck at how wonderfully crafted his tracks were. They sounded so future, and incredibly atmospheric. The use of tiny squelchy noises like little bugs scuttling around came through on this Funktion One soundsystem all around the stage, it sounded as if somebody had dropped a box of tiny metallic objects onto a vibrating marble floor.
I've had a listen to the newer stuff and the sound has changed into a more electro version of Blondie! Or Joy Division. It sounds much more 1980's nostalgic, shoe gazy, punk, indie live bandy and a far cry from the psychedelic ambience and deep minimal techno from Trentemรธller of 2007.
If you like this, have you heard Hyetal, or did you listen to that S U R V I V E link I put in my original post?
