Hip Hop Evolution (Netflix), by damo on Dec 8, 2016 18:42:43 GMT 1, Just caught this 4 episode doc on Netflix. Covers from the birth of rap in New Yorks 1970's through to Gangsta Rap movement and release of Dre's Chronic in '92. Also touches (briefly) on Keith Harings role in taking Grandmaster flash downtown in the very early years. Well worth a few hours of time tbh.

Hip Hop Evolution (Netflix), by phischa on Dec 8, 2016 20:39:46 GMT 1, Yeah it's really a nice documentary. Interesting how the movement started back in the early 70s. I had always thought it all started with the Sugarhill Gang and/or Curtis Blow in the late 70s.

Don't wanna spoil but the Tribe is not even mentioned in the documentary. Kinda surprised me.

I think it was just timing and the desire to follow one narrative from the birth of the scene. I do feel it is well positioned for a follow up covering the 90's+ in full (Tribe, Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z, etc, etc, and probably culminating with Eminem and Kanye) though. That's when everything went truly global/dominated all strands of culture. Although I suspect it becomes a challenge then as the story doesnt realistically follow a single arc, it effectively splintered into all sorts of directions.
I do think it's a culture that is almost unmatched in terms of how far it has reached/how deeply it's influenced. Only comparable with Rock n Roll on that basis, to my mind.

I agree and really liked reading your comment. I'm looking forward seeing further episodes including the 90s with Wu tang, Tribe, Biggie, Nas but also current artist like Kendrick Lamar, Kanye, Eminem. The culture is still evolving and developing, so many different styles and subgenres. Still a lot to explore.

Basicly lost interest for anything on CD.... except Dr Dre.
