Santa's Ghetto 2006, by ร
gent รacardi on Dec 19, 2006 10:51:49 GMT 1, i see your point, but if you miss out then tough. maybe you should of made more of an effort to obtain the print..
If Santa's Ghetto was here in the US, let's see you make "more of an effort", especially if you can't take time off work/school and air fares to travel to the other side of the globe are so expensive at this time of the year.
If you stick with the context, it was all an anguished musing in humor. It's like saying "I hope George W. Bush chokes on his pretzel"... I don't really mean it literally, and its intended effect is the gist behind the sentiment, not the literal occurance. It's an expression; a figure of speech, and doesn't warrant a personal expletive-laced personal attack. Moreover, it wasn't a comment aimed at you personally, but if you chose to take a rhetorical vignette personally, then with all due respect, I'm afraid you've made a mistake by picking a wrong battle.

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by phoenix on Dec 19, 2006 12:14:46 GMT 1, This thread has left me speechless! I love Banksy's work but please people.....take a step back and get some perspective. Words like 'hate' and 'anger'...... saying the situation in 'Iraq is like Disneyland'! This is a piece of paper....a very nice piece of paper all the same, but are you really surprised that it sold out quickly? Are you really surprised that people have bought it to sell on ebay? This is the reality of supply and demand and proof that the world isn't 'fair'. Surely all the intellligent minds on this forum could re-direct this passion towards a subject that really matters...(I won't dictate one).....rather than take things to this extreme. I sympathise with those who didn't get a print, I really do. I know how frustrating it is after missing out on both Grannies and Applause because of the massive hype. But we are causing this hype...along with the media and only we can get it back under control by voting with our minds as well as our wallets. I mean no disrespect to anyone, but please get things into perspective. Phew that was a long one totally agree but i still hope George chokes on his pretzel

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by romanywg on Dec 19, 2006 12:42:05 GMT 1, But we are causing this hype...along with the media and only we can get it back under control by voting with our minds as well as our wallets.
This Forum is definately causing or helping along the hype. Don't get me wrong I joined this forum because I appreciate Banksys work, (although I believe it looks and works far better on exterior walls) and joined to further my knowledge of the man, or woman. (Now there's another question!). It seems to me that a lot of people buy his work because it escalates in price so fast, so many times I read on these forums, willing to swop this for that, that for this. I buy art (James Caulty mostly) that I am going to keep forever, I buy it because I love it. I don't suddenly want to exchange it for something more recent. A couple weeks ago there was all this talk on this board about Friendly Fire and because of that buzz and only that I went up to SG and bought one with the intention of making some money. Why not that's my prerogative. I didn't sell it because I actually really liked it but this forum has become a two edged sword. Stop carping on about others selling their prints it's old news it's always going to happen.

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by monochrome on Dec 19, 2006 12:59:30 GMT 1, i don't think anyone has actually commented about the piece. ie. its quality, the image... the forum is about how fast you can trade to a signed Micallef (the new Banksy style profit maker).. its nothing to with ART anymore.

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by reados on Dec 19, 2006 13:11:09 GMT 1, i live in cornwall mate, i wish i could afford the time off work and the money to come upto london , or bristol and actually purchase one of these to enable me to make comment.
the trouble its very hard to get the work now which why its frustrating and people feel they need to out let the feeling about that. rather than talk about the pieces
there is plenty of room to start a new thread to discuus the artworks in thier own right, but let people have there say as it what makes this an incredibly busy forum
and i appreciate you rants its all good and healthy, join in, let it out, go on my son!
merry christmas

Not really suprising when there are no less than 36 copies of Flags for sale on E bay as of ten minutes ago, probably at least 12 Grannies and the same of Applause.
How depressing.......it really is being seen as a cash cow rather than the image or the message in these pictures. And for this to happen to an artist such as banksy its really F*cking depressing as it seems to me its becomming everything he is against.

I wasn't expecting much when I heard it was going to be ยฃ100, but the quality of the print and the strength of the image are outstanding."
I think it's perhaps one of, if not thee, strongest image he's ever created. Out of all his Canvas works he's produced it's the one that can stand it's own next to some of the 20th century greats. It comes from a long tradition of a proud underclass fighting the ruling classes, this isn't just a contemporary Americana image, but a truly relevant piece that slots into art history. The stars and stripes is now one of the most recognised images in the world. The flag belongs to us all now, so in that sense it becomes more than a parochial image of defiance against Bush etc. It symbolises the strength of humanity over 'systems'. A truly astonishing piece of work IMO, and one that i'd gladly travel the length and breadth of the world to see in a museum at some point, let alone own a print of it. I think it will become a defining image for our generation. His prints may have taken a step down since his early stencil pieces, but his 'art' has definitely taken a step up. We should be proud that we own a piece of this guys work because long after the hype and print nonsense has died down, there'll be a body of work for generations to look upon and study and appreciate and in some cases, marvel about.
Peace and happy xmas ! ;D

Santa's Ghetto 2006, by yojimbo on Dec 19, 2006 16:18:03 GMT 1, So anyway. I went down early on Monday to buy the print having heard about it in the shop, and done some searching about it online to make sure it wasnt all some big prank. Although I have seen his work around for years and liked it this is the first print I own. I thought it would be a good way to get one reasonably cheap.
I had already seen from the wonderfulworkshop site what the image was, and liked it, instantly reminiscient of the famous iwa jima photo to me.
It was much better organised than I expected, full marks to POW. Really liked the print once I got it home, it is an unusual print effect of the black on silver paper and looks quite different. Not a typical Banksy either in my opinion. In the framers now, should look good in my study.
