Banksy & The Ivy, by dkla on May 2, 2007 19:24:46 GMT 1, Given you actually do know what Banksy looks like and he was indeed where you say he was and you're not just pulling our legs...Please don't post any photos of him in the unlikely event you were able to snap some. Who knows who reads this forum and besides, who cares what Banksy looks like! Protect the man, don't expose him... I'm not saying you would -- hopefully all of that goes without saying...

I was having dinner on the next table, i have had meetings with Satchi previously and knew who he was. I have met Banksy once at a friends birthday.
I would not expose him, he is wanted in 7 county's by the police, also he is the main man!!

Its funny - but artists are considered to have 'sold out' if they start earning a bit of money. A street artist does not mean you live on the streets...
People are worried because Banksy was rumoured to have been spotted in the Ivy. My thoughts on this, "why would I give a f*ck". Good luck to him.
Lets be honest all this shit about "keeping it real" is just plain shit. Most of us on this forum are not exactly on the breadline.
DISCUSS....

Banksy & The Ivy, by finsburyparkranger on May 11, 2007 18:54:39 GMT 1, From what I know banksy has been an active participant of the British squat and protest scene. His art and life experience reflects an ideology that has tended to enjoy celebrating equality and diversity. Within this cultural environment the members of the ruling class have tended to be subjected to a reasonable amount of criticism. For Banksy to now be engaging in those circles must be whole new world for him. I would imagine his old stereotypes are being challenged and he's having to question prejudices he once held. Its totally ironic for Banksy to be engaging with Saatchi and drinking in the Ivy.
Although I don't think its something to necessarily to worry about. My gut instinct says that this wiley old Bristolian will be keeping things on his terms and orchestating events rather than the other way around. I would imagine that it shows more about the changing nature of the British establishment than it does about MR B.
You know there's never been a revolution without the people getting support from either the police or the army. If you want to change the world you need to engage with it. I think he's doing just that.
I'm a dreamer.... but I'm not the only one.

Banksy & The Ivy, by Strange Al on May 11, 2007 20:46:54 GMT 1, my comment - this thread is brilliant!
Banksy's comment - "I wouldn't sell sh*t to Charles Saatchi. If I sell 55,000 books and however many screen prints, I don't need one man to tell me I'm an artist. It's hugely different if people buy it, rather than one f**king Tory punter does. No, I'd never knowingly sell anything to him".
(before you ask, it's a quote from an old Banksy interview)

Banksy & The Ivy, by romanywg on May 11, 2007 21:00:36 GMT 1, What's the difference to selling your work to Saatchi or Damien Hirst? (which Banksy has done by the bucket load!) I would read the article here www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/05/14/070514fa_fact_collins very informative. By eating in a posh restaurant is he selling out? No he's having a freebie which he highly deserves.

Banksy & The Ivy, by Strange Al on May 11, 2007 21:16:26 GMT 1, Roman - I read the article the other day. Well worth a read - though obviously only one journalist's take on Banksy.
I think the qoute from Banksy at the end is interesting in this context:
“I have been called a sellout, but I give away thousands of paintings for free, how many more do you want?” he wrote. “I think it was easier when I was the underdog, and I had a lot of practise at it. The money that my work fetches these days makes me a bit uncomfortable, but that’s an easy problem to solve—you just stop whingeing and give it all away. I don’t think it’s possible to make art about world poverty and then trouser all the cash, that’s an irony too far, even for me.” He went on, “I love the way capitalism finds a place—even for its enemies. It’s definitely boom time in the discontent industry. I mean, how many cakes does Michael Moore get through?”
So, who really thinks it was Banksy at the Ivy with Saatchi?

Banksy & The Ivy, by verbalkint on May 12, 2007 0:47:14 GMT 1, I think Banksy is a very smart man, just like Damien Hirst. I dont see him being controlled, i see him being the controller. He knows he is in a position where he can piss on a canvas and sell it for £100k, he knows that every gallery in the world wants a piece of him because he is flavour of the week, month, year and decade. He is wiley enough to become a very powerful man in the art world, and he is also wiley enough to know how to go about it. I think tha Image and enigma that Banksy puts up is different from Banksy the businessman and make no mistake about it, banksy is a superb businessman
I can see him driving a really nice car, dining in nice restaurants and living in a stunning apartment, and why not, the man has earnt it. I dont think that makes him a sell out, you would have to be an utter t**t to live in a squat if you are a millionaire
