Mat Sizing?, by Jaylove on Feb 15, 2017 13:06:35 GMT 1, Hi, I searched and couldn't find anything on this. What is the rule of thumb on mat sizes? I have read online that one should not go any smaller than 2 inches and the standard is 3. But I've seen plenty of pics here that go under that.
Took print to the framer, Print is 27x27 inches. Framer suggested 2 1/2 inch mat with 1 inch boarder (double mat). I felt this was on the smaller side. Thoughts?

Every piece is different really....my personal preference is that framing a print should do just that - frame it and show it in the best possible clarity. I always go fairly classic (apart from a couple of 'pop' pieces which deserves a little something extra 
I always love museum framing of photography pieces. Larger mounts clear the visual space and let your eyes focus on the work...
