Hey maybe it looks great but can you still be considered a street/urban artist when you dive into the world of bathroom accessories? If its a for sale thread om sure some would try. But its a bit like the VNA scarfs, they are great to wear as scarfs. Then theres all the other nick nacks around here like an empty warhol vodka bottle that never had anything in it in the first place, a bottle of sweettoof beer that will never be drunk, 2 waffles from the laz invader show (not the ones in sealed bags, the ones they made to eat frozen into varnish) and god knows what else. Its all just little sidelines for an art enthusiast to have around.

Cool for the purchaser I suppose to be happy looking at these but I think artist loses street cred.ย The waffles tho kinda go with the brand, you know squares and all. Would never eat them thoย
I think the artists doing this have moved past the need street cred. Kaws did beer and light bulbs. About 10 years or so a number of artists did beach towels you could only get at Target online, I think Elizabeth Peyton, Koons, Raymond Pettibon and more, they are quite valuable now. And there have been many t-shirts at Uniqlo, of course Kaws but others I have a great Lawrence Weiner.
The best street artists essentially become the new pop artists. Warhol set the boundaries for this new breed, of which many of the best studied in art school.

On the other hand, I think "It's great to see artists pushing their work into new, possibly unconventional, areas. Make the world a more interesting place. Why shouldn't a melon have a light switch on it?"
And on the other hand, I think "Let's all have a laugh"

I thought it was for the front door on the exterior side, therefore technically still..... fairly close to the street.
There's no way I'd let that ass clown in my house, in human or rug form.
I dont have any issues with artists venturing on to home goods. Why should art only belong on the walls? I dig Parra's stuff and think many artists will follow suit once the print game dies out.

Warhol set the boundaries for this new breed, of which many of the best studied in art school. Interesting take. The Kaws bulb is a little different as it combines an artists identfier with tech to make something new and unexpected. It's sculptural. Towels and housewares, for me, hold no interest.
Warhol was the exception to this as he took everyday household items and transformed them.
You're prob correct that going from street to pop artist is the ultimate goal of a lot of new artist. They may call it transcending to the next level. I call it selling out by licensing your artistic integrity. Thank goodness there are a lot of artists that would rather be broke than go for the quick buck.
I guess for me when a street artist comes out of the shadows into fluorescent lighting with intents on becoming a pop icon I'm done with them.
