Swoon ๐บ๐ธ Contemporary Art โข Street Art โข Art For Sale, by G-Man on Jan 4, 2008 12:44:51 GMT 1, I love the cause and I hope she raises loads
Not sure about all this overnight sensation crap about Swoon.. shes in for the long haul IMO
As to the price again as I have said before... its right that the prints are priced at the market value.. which this one considering the hand finishing is IMO... This deters flippers and ensures the artists work ends up on peoples walls
The whole debate over the hand finishing of prints is everywhere on the forum... IMO I love the fact you get something between a print and an original.. Lovin my hand finished Faile and Aiko prints.. makes me think I have originals so bring it on... Just charge the relevant and appropriate mark up
I love the cause and I hope she raises loads

Swoon ๐บ๐ธ Contemporary Art โข Street Art โข Art For Sale, by bobbymeachamjr on Jan 4, 2008 16:56:13 GMT 1, Yeah absolutely. Who cares if shes been doing street work since 1999. Some of you die hards might of heard of her prior to the last 2 years but simply hearing of a name doesn't = sensation. She is who she is now because of the recent frenzy in street art. Just like a lot of other street artists ie. Micallef
This strategy is going to haunt these overnight sensation artists one day... Overnight sensation? You are kidding right. She has been doing street work since around 1999. Check out this NY Times article written in 2004 www.nytimes.com/2004/07/09/nyregion/09street.html?ex=1247112000&en=87b164f0ec2b3c36&ei=5090Anyway re pricing Swoon Helena's have been going for between $500 and $700 on the bay so this print is priced at market value. Given that it is a worthy cause why shouldn't justseeds sell at market value? It may take longer to sell out but they still get the money rather than a flipper.

Just because someone who has been doing art for close to 10 years becomes known doesn't mean they become overnight sensation, it means that many years of hard work have come to fruition.
2007 was filled with overnight sensations when it comes to street art, but Swoon was not one of them........Hutch comes to mind though

gotta agree...2 years of hard graft (between '05-'07) = overnight sensation?
I think you're doing your sums wrong.
what does that mean anyway? Artists get more exposure and their fan base grows, it does not in anyway dimish the greatness of their work.
I love the new swoon - if only I wasn't so broke I'd get it.

Absolutely - look how many of the prints she has released have been for charity or charitable organisations. 3 prints with justseeds, one print with MRA and countless originals etc.

Well if you class starting off as a graffiti writer in your teens and becoming successful in your late twenties as an overnight sensation then I guess everyone is.
By this token Damien Hirst and all the YBA's were overnight sensations when they became prominent in 1980's. As was koons, murakami etc etc.

Swoon ๐บ๐ธ Contemporary Art โข Street Art โข Art For Sale, by valeha on Jan 4, 2008 17:37:20 GMT 1, bobbymeacham - I think you're not clear on the term overnight sensation. IMO an overnight sensation would be someone who pops onto the scene from nowhere - may ride the "streetart bandwagon" then dissapear (i have one or two peeps in mind) but none are whom you mentioned.
banksy is in no way an overnight senastion, just because his fan base has grown, and his prices have soared as a result does not = overnight sensation.

fortunately for Swoon she is sooo far removed from this statement and hype that what is said on these boards about her has no bearing on her "market". You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but it is factually and conceptually wrong. My pride and joys:

I've been a fan of Banksy since '03 - so for me he's not overnight sensation!!

Good point- it all comes down to the change from the artist having to directly deal with his work and selling to it being taken out of their hands after the grassroot fans have been built. It takes years for it to get into the public consciousness and acquire a speculative (hate that term!!) value.
