Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Rouen Cathedral on Mar 18, 2017 18:47:40 GMT 1, "Are you just making a profit from other people's misery?
Don't worry, Banksy won't see a penny. The artist paid for the installation costs and has now handed it over as an independent local business. The aim is to break even and put any profits back into local projects. "www.walledoffhotel.com/questions.html
The question isn't the profits from running the hotel. Which if he just shuts it down on a month would be a shame. It would be if he releases some of his VIP prints to the uber rich.

Is he an artist or social justice warrior first?
When his arts great everyone wants to talk about that and how great an artist he is. When his arts poor people get all upset if it's criticized and people want to ignore it. Especially if it has a 'nice' theme.
Can't have it both ways.
Oh and speaking about artists selling art to make a living. Don't give me that nonsense haha. That's garbage especially when many other artists get flack for their print prices. Yet it's okay for banksy to sell prints to the uber rich. Forget actual fans of his.
Banksy isn't selling 40$ prints to make ends meet and continue his passion on painting on walls.
Ironically it seems you are defending him for basically being everything he despised early on. An artist making a living. Now that's hilarious.

Artist selling art to make a living is not nonsese, just the plain truth. He didn't like being that at the beginning of his career? Maybe that's just because he started doing graffiti for fun and usually when you do something for fun and you enjoy it you don't care about getting an income out of it.
Changing mindset and goals over the years it's perfectly normal, if he got famous and people are now willing to pay very good money for his work, what's wrong in selling them at those prices? For years there were prints and originals unsold at POW. We all had chances to buy his stuff at "affordable" prices. Now those times are over. What would you expect? A new print every week for £10 just to make fans happy? I'm sorry but being upset that he now sells only to VIPs instead of everyone is the real nonsense. And if you're a fan, can't you just enjoy his murals, exibitions and stuff? Isn't that enough?

That statement is a fact.
This statement is not.

You don't find it ironic that his 'art' he sells is the exact same thing his morons prints mock?
Selling to VIPs is nonsense. Saying it's a change of goals and mindset could be seen as cash grabs and selling out.
Setting up a stall in NYC and selling originals at $50. That was genius. Selling secret prints to millionaires is not.

So now we are back on banksy the great humanitarian? Is he an artist or a humanitarian. If he's both and is great at a humanitarian that doesn't make him great as being and artist and vise versa.
Now when he closes the hotel, how will you feel? Just another rich humanitarian swooping in to throw some money - make some awareness and poof it's all gone.
What will happen to all those originals?

lol seriously?
This tells you what the brand banksy has become.
For the record on me. I'm fine with my WCP copies. And you know what I bet the original banksy would be on my side!

I have learnt some stuff, and perhaps will understand something a little clearer than before, thats how I will feel, and in fact feel already. I am just one of the masses, not an intellectual, not a Uni guy, just an average person who reads things, watches things, forms an opinion, then something like this comes along, and i look at it again, do some reading, listen to peoples opinions, watch some youtube :-) buy a couple of books, talk to people, Open my eyes and my ears What will happen to all those originals? I would imagine the originals have already sold and will go the owners when the place shuts, this is fine with me, thats how he and his team have decided to do it after trying it other ways.
Its all good

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Neate Michael on Mar 19, 2017 12:17:51 GMT 1, This arguing over Banksy selling prints to VIPs. I've been on this board since flags came out. I remember that we were told by POW that he knows he sells his prints under market value but he wanted to do it for his fans. And then we fucked it up for him. Prints were flipped, queues were jumped by organized flippers and the Choose Your Weapon debacle was the end. He'd had enough. He chose to sell prints at market value to people that won't flip them. We had our chance but greed ruined it. I've no problem with how he operates now. I wouldn't mind another book or an open edition print with profits donated to charity. But I can understand why he ain't doing editions of 500 at £500.
This arguing over Banksy selling prints to VIPs.

You think if he did editions of 500 his prices would stay so high?
Man banksy now has his fans blaming themselves. His status is now really at the point he can't do anything wrong. Quite crazy.
And you have a good question. Why isn't he doing a book? And open edition?

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Deleted on Mar 19, 2017 21:06:30 GMT 1, He's done that before and will (probably?) do it again in the future. prints, multiples or original works, with or without the hotel. I can't see any problem with that? He's an artist, that's how artists make a living, selling artworks to people.
He gave the art (his art included) to the local community. He has made his name and money a long time before this hotel project.
Selling his art today to the uber rich, thats life. Going from selling his prints for fifty quid at the beginning to fifty thousand makes no difference to me or if he drives a Bentley turbo tortoise with a big spoiler on the back and spray cans exhausts.
People had their chance to buy at low prices and why did many consider them less desirable to own then than now is not down to Banksy. It's down to the individuals who buy now at high prices and who would never have bought at low prices. The very wealthy like to be seen shopping and like to buy what other wealthy people buy.
There is nothing to criticise in reality with the Walled Off Hotel and the reason for doing it. There are times when having a lot of money to hand enables good projects like this one.
The media takes notice. The wealthy take notice and the young take notice.
