Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Rouen Cathedral on Mar 19, 2017 22:11:14 GMT 1, Is he an artist or social justice warrior first? When his arts great everyone wants to talk about that and how great an artist he is. When his arts poor people get all upset if it's criticized and people want to ignore it. Especially if it has a 'nice' theme. Can't have it both ways. Oh and speaking about artists selling art to make a living. Don't give me that nonsense haha. That's garbage especially when many other artists get flack for their print prices. Yet it's okay for banksy to sell prints to the uber rich. Forget actual fans of his. Banksy isn't selling 40$ prints to make ends meet and continue his passion on painting on walls. Ironically it seems you are defending him for basically being everything he despised early on. An artist making a living. Now that's hilarious. He gave the art (his art included) to the local community. He has made his name and money a long time before this hotel project. Selling his art today to the uber rich, thats life. Going from selling his prints for fifty quid at the beginning to fifty thousand makes no difference to me or if he drives a Bentley turbo tortoise with a big spoiler on the back and spray cans exhausts. People had their chance to buy at low prices and why did many consider them less desirable to own then than now is not down to Banksy. It's down to the individuals who buy now at high prices and who would never have bought at low prices. The very wealthy like to be seen shopping and like to buy what other wealthy people buy. There is nothing to criticise in reality with the Walled Off Hotel and the reason for doing it. There are times when having a lot of money to hand enables good projects like this one. The media takes notice. The wealthy take notice and the young take notice.
So when the hotels closes that art is staying in the community? Is it going to be a museum?

Honestly people keep saying the art is for the community. I want to know if that's true? Is it?....
If so that would be awesome.

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Rouen Cathedral on Mar 21, 2017 16:56:21 GMT 1, Looking at the Walled Off Hotel I've been thinking the past couple days about what it is. Is it art? Philanthropy/advocacy? Both? This has made me start to question whether it can really be both?
I think on a very high level, a micro scale, looking down from the clouds it can be argued that its both. I think the concept behind it is incredible. Showcase some art, create jobs and money for the local community and economy, promote tourism, promote awareness for the region and the problems. It has everything.
The problem to me is when you start looking at it on a macro level. Zooming in and taking it for what it is. Looking at the components, the details, the physicality of it.
Looking at it as if its a real hotel and if its meant to promote tourism and awareness to the area, I think that works. Its creating jobs, its bringing money to the community (we think), and its definitely putting the conflict in the spotlight. It appears to be working in that regard. The motivation to create all those things from the original concept seem great and successful.
Now if the above is true the hotel itself is not art. It can't be. If the hotel is art to me it reduces all of it. It dooms the true purity of the goal. It becomes a product of an artist. It puts the artist at the forefront. Bella Gladman may be right that its "ludicrous pompousness."
Now can the hotel be real (not art) while containing art? Yes, I think it could. I think it could house all the small scale individual works its does, the murals, even the concept of visiting and adding to the wall. That could all be art within this reality of helping the area and bringing awareness to the situation with a real hotel.
However, the publicity of Banksy, the includance of it becoming Banksys website (the only subject), that Banksy is running it, yields that the whole thing is a work of art. Surely, it could have been opened, managed by some 'third party', there could have been a couple photos on Banksys site showing some of the individual works. This would have created the same awareness, interest, movement to the area.
But for now the hotel is a performance by Banksy, that seems like it will end, that all the art will go somewhere else and the hotel will close. If thats the case, it is a shame. It degrades all the good of the original concept and leaves it as just art.
Only the future will tell if thats true and what will become of the hotel and the art within. Conceptually, the concept is great. I understand how it came to be. But, when you really break down the factors, the components, the details I'm afraid that 'it being art' distracts from the purity of the concept and the goal of awareness. Yes, it sparks discussion, helps the economy, brings awareness, etc.But it also becomes about the artist, who made it, the greatness of the artist pulling it off, the greed that maybe if I hit F5 for 10 straight hours I'll luck out. Its a distraction to the original concept and pure goal.

Maybe too much. I have a lot of respect for what he did, because now he took risks. This could upset some people from every sides. I mean, I don't think it will do real harm, but he took some risks for his career. I see it as the product of a responsible free artist. And I have a lot of respect for that. Even if I do not like everything (for example, the "out of order" elevator is a lot too kitsch ...or cynical to me).
Usually, "smart" people who have "succeded" try to avoid upsetting too many people (if we forget the ones creating meaningless controversies to make a name for themselves), instead of being free. From an outside perspective, I see it as he took risks (more than the money he did put into the project), real people are working there and thus he is trying to make it a success.

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by 11 on Mar 22, 2017 0:33:50 GMT 1, When we visited the hotel, the manager had said they would be more than happy to provide extra beds for children so from their perspective they see no reason why you couldn't. I guess the biggest issue for children is that there is very little for them to do. It's old-school, like when most of us were kids and you used to go out and make your own fun so there doesn't seem to be very much specifically for a child to do. I didn't see any park or playground but then I wouldn't have been looking anyway.
The Mini-Bus ride from Tel-Aviv to the Checkpoint was the scariest part of the adventure - maybe it was just our driver but he was a lunatic!! In Palestine a lot of the cars are a bit knackered but there are some new cars too.....if you do have kids then you should probably check out the condition of the cab before jumping into it. Other than that I saw nothing.
All that said, I wanted to take my 13 yr old daughter....and after Dismaland she is desperate to go but my ex is adamant that she cant so can imagine your challenge is far greater than mine

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by smokie on Mar 22, 2017 0:48:54 GMT 1, Has anyone considered bringing their toddlers & young children with them for a stay? I certainly considered it as I am a single parent of a 14yo but the combined flight times of 60+ hours from Australia not to mention around $2000US each just for flights put me off a tad. Shame really, as it's truly a once in a lifetime adventure

It struck a chord with me as we just don't see that anymore, if the kids are playing on the streets here then its normally a scene from GTA or re-enacting the tea-bagging one of em got on COD the night before
For our kids; They do have Wi-Fi in the hotel and I had a pretty good 4G signal when I was walking around.....although got a text from vodafone on my last day telling me my Red World Traveller membership didn't count in Palestine!!

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Daniel Silk on Mar 22, 2017 2:45:04 GMT 1, Do you think Banksy is happy with this Hotel project so far?
I guess it's got a good amount of media coverage, good and bad, but the street party and shop seems to have been a bit of a disappointment to most Feels like it all had great potential but hasn't really gone to plan. Maybe the thing of the location and the country it's in has made it more difficult than he imagined to pull this one off?

I think it's proved a little more difficult and different then thought.
I also think the line of what's art vs real vs chairity has muddied up the 'project'.
I posted my thought on that here. urbanartassociation.com/thread/144407/walled-off-hotel-philanthropy-advocacy
Overall a pretty slow 20 days compared to NYC and even dismaland.

Banksy - The Walled Off Hotel ★★★, by Happy Shopper on Mar 22, 2017 12:23:46 GMT 1, Jesus, it only just opened to the public!
Obviously there was a rush of media and excitement when it was announced, but it's only a hotel/art exhibition... and in a tricky location to get to. I'm sure there will be further events to generate interest throughout the year, but let's not expect daily updates or releases.
