Good news, there are beds available for £30 apparently and flights for a just over £200 from London. A lot more affordable than I thought it would be. |

bethlehem is much cheaper ! jerusalem is very expensive...
i checked the hotels. i would stay in bethlehem.
i am not sure if they are controlling the hotel confirmation at the airport in tel-aviv...
you should avoid to say that you are going to the westbank area.

Funny I was in Israel same sort of time. Seeing all of these posts has sent my mind whizzing back to the time.
I'm slightly ashamed to say that I was an ignorant 18 year old, just out fors**ts and giggles. I learnt a lot more about the Palestinian struggle long after I left Israel.
It was quite full on in 95/96, within a month of arriving in Israel Yitzak Rabin was assassinated and I saw his body in state in Jerusalem, I spent Xmas Eve in Bethlehem. All I remember of Bethlehem was that we were shipped in on a minibus to a central square, given about 3 hours to get really drunk with a bunch of backpackers whilst an Arafat speech was projected live on to one of the walls. I remember dancing on a huge lorry trailer with lots of Palestinians. The remainder of my months in Israel saw several suicide bombers in Tel Aviv.
At that time backpackers hitched all around Israel and were advised only to get lifts in cars with yellow number plates and to never ever get in cars with black number plates as these were Arab cars.
The one time I did go in a car with a black number plate was hitching to the Dead Sea, and the guy was lovely and went out of his way to help us and take us to the best spot.
The soundtrack to my trip was Robert Miles 'Children' it was played everywhere!

These movements are easy and safe for tourist BUT are long and difficult for palestinians working in jerusalem, or israelis who want to enter the west bank, both need permits to enter the othe side, and signs in hebrew warn israeli before they enter the west bank that it is a dangerous area for them....

The "luxury hotel with views of the wall" concept is strong enough to carry itself; going further and turning it into a 5-star Banksy-themed funhouse feels clumsy. It seems counter-intuitive but I would argue putting easy-to-consume political art on the walls actually weakens the concept by making the existential tension of the situation more palatable for visitors; buy a room, get your penitence free
