Well, a post yesterday, the third one since I am here ( the first one was strongly anti-French ) about google translator ( it was clearly an attack yesterday, that I known nothing in art, without name me apart " goolge translator " etc... Who really knows art ? Snobish guys in contemporary galleries ? Talk about street-art to these guys and they will laugh at you... Some others friends blocked me too ( I know I post a lot and I know that it could irritate some of us ) , and it was persons that I love and respect... There was this mail also about the wrong threads, etc... What is funny is that I saw one person talking today about Invader ' s print ( yesterday, she said that Invader was sh.t ) .. I 'd like to know what people think about Stik per example ? Do tehy rellay love Stik or just for flipping and value... Well, my thoughts are not in order, yeps, I don't think that I am here the most welcome... Ps : Concerning Banksy and the lack of comments, I 'd like to say something about : Why do people, Journalists, politics, newspapers, media only speak ot this artwork in term of value ? And not about the real painting, his meaning, etc... Where is the man ? When you read " Banksy " now, it is like a brand ( and it s really a shame , they forget the human, the real person ) , they associate and resume the artist in 2 or 3 words : " Banksy/Value " and " defaced or not " , understand they loose K of $ . When you come back down from cloud cuckoo land give the rest of us living down in the real world a shout. You are not realistic, because an IPO of a corporation is also not always at market value. The market itself after the IPO will price the stock for market value. Now to get back to the art. I don't think that an artist has interest to sell at a so called 'market value'. Unless you are Hirst. The intention is to sell prints for people that have no chance to buy an original. As long there is a demand, the price may rise, whether with or without flippers, so market value is never constant. And yes, I do live in a realistic world. I am glad I do.
The IPO price is generally only available to insiders - institutional investors (pension funds for example) who are buying huge numbers.
Alibaba popped 20% before the bell rang from the initial price.
So not a solid comparison unless you're suggesting a print is available only to VIPs and then immediately on release the print price increases by 20%?

I don't think that is the best solution to increase the price. Maybe I am weird but this Jimmy Ferrari is worse than me ; no in fact, it is a banal and true story now : The laws of the capitalism. Most realize that they are an inevitable part of print releases, and applaud efforts to thwart them (such as those employed by POW, or doing a surprise print release like CH) while not letting it get to them in general. I believe people would be much more upset if they were priced out of purchasing the art from the outset due to the artist setting high prices; it also really changes how you look at the artist, since prints - like all above have said - are usually supposed to be for people who love the artist but can't afford originals.
Most people on here flip out (I see what I did there) when people openly flip on here because this is supposed to be a place for art fans, etc. so to be on here and do that is essentially like screwing your community members over for your own benefit. And it certainly isn't something that should be encouraged, since anyone can do it and it's mostly only one's conscience/empathy that prevents them from doing so, so gotta knock them down a peg morally when possible.

I absolutely agree with everything you say. Especially about the fact that flipping on here is just f***d up, since this is a place to discuss, learn, and enjoy. I have no issue with folks selling for a profit, but come on, 24 hours after the realease without even havin it in hand, just shows you don't care about the community aspect of this forum. S |

I guess that depends on what 'market value' means - there will always be those who buy based on emotion immediately after missing out and spend a lot of money. I think $5,000 was pretty close to market value, and many of the recent ones have been going for 6-7, heading slightly downward. I'd also argue that % is the proper way to measure how close the artist came to market value, rather than the amount of money made by flippers.
Again, always hard to predict (and like others said, there will always be a secondary market, so unless the artist overprices the print then you probably won't see the true market value until maybe a year later).

You're right - cheap print releases allow those to buy art.

You are not realistic, because an IPO of a corporation is also not always at market value. The market itself after the IPO will price the stock for market value. Now to get back to the art. I don't think that an artist has interest to sell at a so called 'market value'. Unless you are Hirst. The intention is to sell prints for people that have no chance to buy an original. As long there is a demand, the price may rise, whether with or without flippers, so market value is never constant. And yes, I do live in a realistic world. I am glad I do. Forum members do good things like that on here all the time. The problem arises when the person on the receiving end abuses the favor, leading people to do less favors for less people. This happens unfortunately often, and it can be very hard to predict.
