What Gallery is the new POW?, by Daniel Silk on Mar 17, 2017 1:47:32 GMT 1, www.picturesonwalls.com
What gallery could become the new POW of the Urban Art scene?
POW was the once the only place to buy all new print releases by Banksy, Eine, Dolk, Dface, Invader, Paul Insect, but things have changed. Do you think any gallery will ever exist again with such a powerful list of artists onboard? Or was it just a golden time in the scene that has now become fragmented with Artists wanting more control over their releases.
Could the Lazarides Gallery now be trying to break into more affordable art along the lines of the old POW? But is it now possible to get good enough artists to become part of that?
Galleries like Nelly Duff, Art Republic and Print Club are probably closer to what POW once was, and actually I might even suggest they are much better!

What Gallery is the new POW?, by 11 on Mar 17, 2017 3:56:34 GMT 1, I don't think art republic resemble anything close to the POW operating model or principles. Nelly Duff have always been a great outfit but thought they could have done more, they really seemed to have died away now. Souled Out Studios are still going at it the way they always have and while the SOS artists seem to do very well in Asia they never really get much recognition here so apart from the prints and sculpture, we rarely get to see their shows. Graffiti Prints play a big role these days but it would be good to see them put on more shows.

It's much easier, cheaper and faster now for any artist to self promote using Instagram than it ever was before. You have only got to look at the Bast print release yesterday, he posted it up without any advertising and within minutes it was sold out. As 11 said, I think Graffiti prints are probably the nearest to POW in the UK. I know they get a bit of stick here, but the print quality and customer service is as good as any. Art republic are like the Ikea of the art world

What Gallery is the new POW?, by Ruggs on Mar 17, 2017 8:28:05 GMT 1, Agree with 11 and sturban's comments. Despite years of very little activity POW still has a decent number of prints available from some stellar artists. That reminds me I keep meaning to grab one of those Petro 'Watchamacallit' prints. SOS are still going strong and operate the same way as they did back in the early days.

I think a lot of people don't realise they are still selling a lot of the old prints until it gets mentioned here. People are still paying over the odds for the Bristol Museum posters that are still readily available. Same with the dran book and blu prints. They sat there for an age unsold, but once they get a mention here, people started to snap them up.

If Dismaland, the Popup Dran Show and Walled Off Hotel are them being inactive I can't wait until they start up again!

Exactly, even without the Commercial Street gallery, they show all the others how to innovate and keep a buzz around the scene.

What Gallery is the new POW?, by Daniel Silk on Mar 18, 2017 15:05:45 GMT 1, Still some really nice pieces available on the POW website, so it makes we wonder why are they not selling? Does the website look a bit bland by today's standards? I wonder if it was given a re design and they cleared the site up highlighting some of the better pieces that they still have in stock.

What Gallery is the new POW?, by Sundowner on Mar 18, 2017 15:36:24 GMT 1, In my opinion nothing could ever come close to the buzz generated around this scene by POW in the early days between 2001 to 2006 - they really had the market to themselves back then. It was largely down to the creative spark of something new and different and the DIY mentality that made POW what it was then. By the time of Barely Legal in 2006, so called street art galleries were popping-up all over the place and much of the creativity of the scene started waning.
Whilst there is definitely space for a new print house (and there are some great ones in Jealous and Print Club to name two), sadly I think those times are long gone as the artists these days are simply not breaking new ground in the same way as they were back then - although I'd love to be proved wrong.

Since it means so many disparate things to so many people, the term arguably becomes meaningless, perhaps even unworkable.
I've always associated New Wave with bands such as Talking Heads, Blondie and the B-52s.
But if your definition is different, or broader โ extending to the likes of Kajagoogoo โ then I wholeheartedly agree with your pithy equations.

For me, of that time period, I got records by Talking Heads, Blondie, Elvis Costello, Dead Boys, Clash, XTC, Jam, Ramones, Sex Pistols et al at the same time and thought Punk Rock. To me not being able to play your instrument was not a necessary requirement. Like any scene, the edge got smoothed over, yes Kajagoogoo an easy target, as are Thompson Twins, and so many others that fit the scene as bands went from not selling to radio formats being created. I don't think Talking Heads ever "smoothed" their edge, I recently watch the Demme movie Stop Making Sense for the first time in awhile and it is brilliant, gave me chills.
But it is fun to cross-pollinate any of the arts for good conversation! I never started wearing blue and brown!

Nothing wrong with the website, it's just herd mentality on here that makes people only want what's discussed on page 1.. Pow have probably sold tons of prints since this and the bast thread were started.
