I'd be worried that it would fade easily, pick up dust that I'd be too paranoid to clean off, etc. How do these kinds of pieces hold up over time in an average home?

They'd be so beautiful and elegant without.

I have a couple pieces on wood. They look the same now as when I bought them. I just keep them out of direct sunlight and take a feather duster to them once or twice a year.
The only other thing you might have to worry about is changes in humidity. I live in a dry climate and run a humidifier year-round. So I'm at a consistent 40% humidity. If you have large fluctuations between damp and dry, the wood could expand and contract, causing the paint to crack.

I respect and really like bleks work as well but not fond of recycled images with small changes. To have a limited print to only have it reproduced with small changes devalues something that was thought of as special and makes you feel ripped off
