Imagine they buy a random domain name for each big print release, so everyone knows the gallery website would not actually be the domain to visit, and the release domain would only become known at the time of the release. That would easy traffic to the gallery site, and maybe make a release more reliable. What do you think?
* There's a specific time period during which you can register interest - 2 hours, 2 days, whatever. While it's difficult to prevent multiple registrations using email address as a unique identifier, as email addresses are easy to create, perhaps cellphone number could be used to make it slightly more difficult
* At the end of this period, the appropriate number of 'entries' are chosen at random (to match the edition size)
* Each 'winner' is contacted and sent a link to complete their order. Perhaps they're sent a unique code by SMS if cellphone number has been used as the identifier as above
* Each 'winner' is given a relatively generous amount of time to complete their order - if the order is not complete within that time period, the opportunity expires and another 'winner' is chosen from the initial list of interested parties, and they are given the same opportunity to complete their order
* Repeat until sold out
Having a more civilised time period to enter billing / postage details would help cut down on those submitting incorrect information in a blind panic, which in turn just generates extra work for the gallery after the fact when people have to contact them to correct the mistake.
It would level the playing field slightly for those who don't have access to the fastest equipment or connection, and for those who don't have the luxury of being able to waste an afternoon endlessly refreshing a website.
I guess it removes the ability for the gallery to boast that a release sold out in 3 milliseconds, but it would at least give them a metric of the number of people who were interested in buying. I suspect this mechanism already exists for other content released online so I'm sure I'm probably stating the obvious here.
As for my interest in this release, I'm stuck on an overly warm train that hasn't moved in over an hour so I'm not even trying, but I imagine that sitting here facing an unknown delay is far less frustrating than sitting at home waiting for this to happen.

Since the release didn't happen as early as noon BST half of the western world is at work and refreshing away. |
