That's just pisspoor. Character my arris. Looks like fucking amateur hour at Laz... maybe if you were shelling out £50 it's acceptable. But when it's that money I'd want it spot on.

The normal cause of such appearance is during the print production and paint on the silk (nylon) screen begins to dry. The main reasons for this is too many pulls of that particular colour are done in turn. I can't remember what the edition number is, but you're generally not going to pull one colour for the entire edition in a single go. Usually you'd set a target for yourself, say 10 or 20 prints, before having to wash the screen, and do something else while it's drying.

If the paint/medium on the screen starts to dry, it will block the holes on the mesh of the screen. Where the holes are blocked the paint can't get through and that's what it looks like. It's common to see it around the edges of a colour area because that's where it'll dry first.

But your framer says the paint is flaking, I find this both unusual and unlikely, but I guess stranger things have happened. If this is the case then you should be able to see the flakes somewhere. If you could see these loose it would be diagnostic. Is it possible your framer saw the speckled aspect and made the assumption it was flaking off?

I can't believe they got the registration so off also, and then sent them out like that! It would be all I saw when looking at it 

That print should never have gotten past QC.

They don’t number prints in printing order.
It is not ‘flaking’, it is just gaps in screens for sure. These inks do not flake, they would not have gone down properly in the first place if that was the case

That does make sense since I didn't see any flake pieces anywhere. Gaps in the screen then. Thanks for the advice.

Just to clarify, the speckles are not from gaps in the screens, but where the gaps (which allow the paint through) become gradually blocked from the paint drying.

This is particularly susceptible to happen in the summer when it is hot. It can be a hazard because if the paint drys on the screen, you might not be able to wash it off with water, causing this effect each time you print with that particular screen. Meaning the screen needs to be stripped and redone which is a big hassle. Oh the joys of printmaking.

Screen printing is very influenced by the temperature and humidity of the room it is being done in. I often turn heaters off to avoid this happening.

Speckled/flaky paint. See previous posts/images. 

If it's anything like other releases from this gallery they will have some APs or printers' proofs held back. No idea if they do from this run though. It's also pretty good practice for a gallery to hold some spares just in case this type of thing happens.

Highly likely all of them have something in, its the screen printing process.

apart from the ones where some fool has put pencil marks all over the bottom right.

Reading back the last page or two, it doesn't appear that anything's been sorted for the guy's print.There is obviously going to be slight variation with screens, but there's also poor craftsmanship. Looking at the photos, I guess everyone has to make their mind up which one this is.

My one is the same, they going to send me a new one!
