Kaws "Beef", by natstan on Apr 16, 2017 12:45:55 GMT 1, It has to come to this eventually right? Freeny has been dissecting just about anything he can get hold of. It's only a matter of time and the time is now.
Just felt it's poor form on kaw's part as nobody ever 'owns' anything, especially it's not a trademark or patent. You never see parra do this to that fucci guy even if the latter 'copies' even more blatantly. Freeny did the right thing though by staying clear of the aftermath.

Kaws "Beef", by Con Art Studio on Apr 16, 2017 13:36:46 GMT 1, I love kaws but for him to say that freeny made a career out of ripping off one of his own characters is beyond pathetic... Kaws' ENTIRE career has been based off of ripping off other's characters and images, the companion itself is a ripoff from Disney. Kaws has some serious self esteem issues which is odd because I would think selling prints for $20-$30k each would go a long way to help resolving those issues
As for Freeny, it doesn't make much sense to dissect a piece that already comes dissected.

My only experience of Kaws was the talk he did at the YSP. After the talk he stayed behind to sign stuff for the general public. I think he must have been there for two hours or so, after the talk. He was very generous with his time. I have no idea whether this is indicative of his attitude towards fans generally.

Kaws "Beef", by Happy Shopper on Apr 19, 2017 9:59:39 GMT 1, It's odd that so many people don't seem to be able to see the difference between taking inspiration from something, or subverting something (As Kaws did with Mickey Mouse), and stealing a concept (dissected toys).
Kaws's Dissected Companion (a dissected toy) was obviously the concept that Freely stole and applied to dozens of other toys. Which is fine, and obviously Kaws was aware but not bothered enough to say anything... But Freely now saying the Kaws version needed improving was clearly the straw that broke the camel's back for Kaws.

I'm not 100% sure either... but I'm more certain that the idea for doing other toys came from the success of Kaws's Companion. I've seen internal diagram drawings of cartoon characters (their bones, etc), but not dissected like this.

Kaws "Beef", by brazzy on Apr 19, 2017 16:08:31 GMT 1, Not sure why Jason chose to do a companion. at least with other dissected toys he's made, there is some deniability. Not sure what he is trying to accomplish with this. If he was intending to honor and not offend he should have clearly stated that this is a tribute that isn't for sale.
It is odd how Kaws gets weird about people appropriating images of his that he's kind of already appropriated from other artists. maybe not as blatant as this companion dissected ripoff, but still. This argument is always so frustrating and full of semantics.

Last year he literally went on a quick IG rant when Disney and Coach collaborated because the handshake was similar to an old drawing of his. He then quickly deleted it. He is so far out there from normality it is insane. Most of what he has done is a blatant ripoff. He literally has snoopy pieces that are exactly the same with X's, Spongebob Pieces with X's. I'm not even sure why he cares, but it's almost delusional of him to act this way about pieces and ideas he has stolen elsewhere prior.

Kaws "Beef", by Yeah Yeah Yeah Round2 on Apr 19, 2017 16:32:54 GMT 1, Maybe off topic, but what was Kaws issue when Selim used the coffins to display his 4 footers at his show?
On another note, I wasn't too pushed about Freeny's work until I saw 3D models (he always showed his gummy Bear images on kidrobot). I hope he does well, but yeah he'll eventually have to find an alternative concept. I would have loved to see how the finished Kaws dissected piece turned out. The vinyl scene needs some new life badly.

I think Kaws just objected to the coffins because it added/altered something to the Companions that he didn't intend. The coffins looked too official.

Kaws "Beef", by jfactor on Apr 19, 2017 16:53:56 GMT 1, I forgot about the coffin controversy!
Yeah it's kinda silly he went as far as to publicly shame Feeny for something he himself partially bases his career on...
The difference between Kaws and Feeny is that Feeny is a one trick pony. Like it's been stated, all he does is add a dissected section onto whatever he can get his hands on. Kaws however does have a lot of original content from the old days: bendy, blitz, etc. I guess having official licenses to appropriate Disney and Star Wars characters can have an effect on ones ego...
In the end Brian should've just kept his ego in check though.

Kaws "Beef", by Happy Shopper on Apr 19, 2017 17:48:30 GMT 1, how is kaws' dissection an original concept when kaws' himself stole the dissection, almost detail for detail, from Damien Hirst's Hymn Statue: Because "dissection" itself isn't the "original concept" here, it's creating a dissected model of a toy that's original.
Clearly it was influenced by seeing Damien Hirst's statue, but Hirst's concept was to elevate a toy dissection model to "art" and remake it in bronze and giant size.
Kaws only took the aesthetic and applied it to something else, and created something new... IMO

I guess Kaws is about 50 years late. So original.
Good pop art wasn't taken a cartoon character, drawing it exactly as the strip and putting a x in place of the eyes.
