On a related note, I'm trying to figure out how to frame a skate deck as well.

I used an 14x11" frame and cut the mat to 2 1/4" each side with a Logan 4000. This left about 1/16" overlapping the magazine. I made some spacers out of extra mat board to support the magazine behind the cut mat. 5 layers of 4ply mat did it. Stuck those in place with double-sided tape. It's in there really tight. Came out pretty well, though not as fancy with the graphics like smishdown.

Look great! I was thinking of doing the same with couple of specials..ROA etc... I looked at holding mag with piece of cut foam board instead of layered mat - same result though! I personally prefer your simpler framing!
