Dallas: TX, by Harveyn on Apr 24, 2017 23:16:32 GMT 1, I have a late afternoon and evening to kill in Dallas Texas next month (17th May).
Any recommendations of places to stay downtown along with art related activities to catch? Is there an arts district? Is the DMA worth a visit?
Ideally looking for somewhere nice to stay with options for good art and food.

Dallas: TX, by I Woke in Relief on Apr 24, 2017 23:38:56 GMT 1, DMA is worth a visit (and it's free, except if there is a traveling exhibit, but everything else is free). They've got some nice stuff in their Modern collection.
Next door the Nasher sculpture center is 100% worth visiting, seriously incredible collection. Behind that, the Crow Collection of Asian Art is awesome, and also free. Don't forget to check out the Daniel Arsham piece he just installed downtown as well.

Dallas: TX, by dwight on Apr 25, 2017 3:20:12 GMT 1, That eine piece is long gone. Was a temporary wall in the arts district while museum tower was under construction.
The Modern in Ft Worth is excellent, but 40 minutes each way will eat up your whole afternoon.
The arts district is nice and a great place to spend the afternoon...the park, the dma, the nasher, etc. Not much in the emerging artist or urban art category.
The Dallas Contemporary is by far the most cutting edge, emerging artist scene. They've hosted Faile, JR and Shepard Fairey shows, but also Richard Phillips, Julien Schnabel, Mario Testino, John Houck, Nate Lowman, Jeff Zilm, Bruce Weber, Dan Colen, to name a few. www.dallascontemporary.org
AND NOW is the best gallery. Link is to previous shows. www.andnow.biz/archive
The Daniel Arsham is near these two places as are the Shepard Fairey and Faile murals. I'm happy to get you the exact addresses if that helps.
The Joule (downtown) is great and has the Taschen reading room for art and photo book lovers. This gives you good location as well. If you like nicer hotels with good location for what you'll want to see, check the crescent www.crescentcourt.com or the ritz www.ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/dallas both walkable to arts district.
If you're flying into DFW, the orange line will bring you from Terminal A to uptown/downtown Dallas (exactly 1hour). If you're flying into Love field, its short taxi or uber to any of the above.
I would have really enjoyed personally meeting you and sharing my collection of Faile, Banksy, Bast, Insect works, but I'll be out of town on the 17th. If I can be of any assistance, please let me know. I've lived in Uptown for 8 years and am very familiar with the area and the Dallas arts scene.

Dallas: TX, by txjaxx on Apr 25, 2017 5:10:59 GMT 1, Dallas native here. The number one recommendation I have is the Nasher. It will be between exhibits when you go but the collection is nice and so is the building and garden. As mentioned before, Deep Ellum is good for galleries and street art as well as restaurants and nightlife and is adjacent to downtown. The Design District has lots of galleries and has some restaraunts too but is not as walkable as Deep Ellum. The Dallas Contemporary is there and has some great exhibits now. Downtown is not very exciting aside from the Joule, but that's only about a block's worth of real estate.

Dallas: TX, by txjaxx on Apr 27, 2017 0:13:40 GMT 1, And forgot to add that you might want to hit Northpark mall. It was founded by Raymond Nasher, the guy who built the Nasher along with his wife. So some of their collection of sculptures and paintings is installed throughout the mall, including Warhol, KAWS (might be gone), and lots of others. It's a beautiful building as well and not your typical mall. Recommend La Duni for eating if you go there. Meso Maya is downtown if you eat down there.

If I remember correctly the Kaws was a permanent addition - there's a statue and a set of original paintings (the paintings are above the food court, I think).
edit: at a minimum the statue is permanent:
